The wages paid to them for their work was company "script" and could only be used in company owned establishments so all most all of it was recovered through one of their businesses or for house rent

. While the company provided nice housing, schools, stores, pool, bowling alley ,library, clubhouse and motel, many yearned for independence from the company, which was hard to attain.

 The Company sold out to Inland steel co. and they in turn sold to Island Creek Coal, and many left Wheelwright. For a time it appeared that Wheelwright may become a ghost town, when several gov agencys combined to remodel the homes , sell them and build the town back up ...It worked and we now have a nice little town in which to live and raise our children.

 The local High School was known as WHEELWRIGHT HIGH SCHOOL. The school colors were maroon and white. Their mascot was the Wheelwright High School TROJAN......Time moves on and Wheelwright High School no longer exists. The last graduating class was in 1993.

 Consolidation of Wheelwright High Scool and rival McDowell High School(a feat everyone thought was inpossible) has produced the South Floyd Raiders, a beautiful new school that sits atop a hill in Hi Hat. We are very proud of our new school , especially our Football team,( see link below).
