ROBERT RICHIE

Robert, 3rd child born in Samuels, Kentucky June or September 15 1902, (birth and school records were often not correct.) He was raised in Samuels where he attended school and worked. He as other Richie's did, worked in the community doing mostly farm work which was the prime source of employment. He also worked on the railroad.

Meeting her at school, he used to walk about 20 miles to Bullitt County to "court" Katherine Greathouse. Often coming to the country church "peeping" through the church windows just to see her. He married Katherine Greathouse June 14, 1930 at the Nelson County courthouse in Bards town, Kentucky.

They later moved to Cox Creek, where they lived and started a family. In the country they lived on a farm raising hogs & chickens. They had a smokehouse to store their meats. The kids said they often used to get (borrow) milk from the neighbors cows they caught grazing. Fruit trees, berries and garden vegetables were plentiful sources of food on the farm to feed the family.

Moving to Louisville, he worked at Louisville Serta Bedding Company for many years until he retired after 30 years of employment. He a was very loyal and dependable employee and never missed a day of work. He was well liked by his co-workers and the "Big Boy Upstairs". He was so trusted, dependable and reliable that he was given the keys to the company to open and close the building. He was also in charge of the security alarm system in case of emergency.

After his retirement he remained active with his family and co-workers. He was always fixing different people's cars and trucks. You could count on him to give you advice on what he thought might be your car's trouble. However if anyone mentioned fishing he was always ready to go. He kept his supplies and equipment handy so he would be available at a moment's notice if anyone stopped by. He enjoyed spending time with various family & friends fishing and would spend many hours on the banks of lakes in Nelson, Jefferson and Bullitt Counties. Professional Wrestling was also one of his favorite pass times. He would always be available for Tuesday night wrestling. His sons and son-in-laws would take turns taking him to see the matches.

He also liked to relax sitting in his favorite chair and smoking his rolled cigarettes. He was very quite spoken but always enjoyed the company of others. Working hard all his life, he set an excellent example of commitment to providing for his large family. Sixteen children were born; a daughter, Pearl Miller, preceded him in death. Children are, Charlie, Robert, Thomas, Johnnie, James of Savannah, Ga., Julia, Amelia, Frances, Elizabeth (deceased), Mattie, Josephine, Geraldine of Clarksville , Tenn., Shirley Dean, Shirley Jean (twins) and Patricia. After a brief illness, he departed this life April 22, 1991 at home on Chestnut Street.

Favorite Color: Brown & Gray
Favorite Sayings: " I better get back to the poor house." "There's no harm in looking."
Favorite Thing to do: Fishing, Fishing, Fishing. Tinkering with things around the house, Wrestling matches at Convention Center. Later years he enjoyed the TV soap operas.
