Trinity vs. St. Xavier

Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium
Louisville, KY
September 30, 2016

© 2016 by Ron Harrison

Trinity improves their record to 7-0 and has now won 11 of their last 12 meetings with St. Xavier with a 35-13 victory tonight.  Trinity dominated tonight and the Shamrocks ran a very efficient, methodical offense and controlled the clock with three long scoring drives of 80 yards or more.  Trinity rolled up 287 yards on the ground against a staunch Tiger defense that had surrendered only 80 yards on the ground per game in their previous five contests.  Trinity QB Spencer Blackburn also threw two touchdown passes tonight.  While there are some very good football teams in Class 6A this year the Shamrocks appear to be playing at a different level at this time.

Trinity recorded 23 first downs and 388 yards of total offense.  The Shamrocks were penalized six times for 50 yards and did not commit a turnover tonight.  St. Xavier recorded 16 first downs and 224 yards of total offense.  The Tigers were penalized six times for 44 yards and had one pass intercepted.  St. Xavier had the misfortune of losing probably their number one “big play guy”  Blake Roshkowski for this game and the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.

Roderick Thomas led Trinity’s ground game with 151 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.  Spencer Blackburn added 115 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.  Spencer Blackburn completed 15 of 21 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.  Noah Ellison caught five passes for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Desmond Ridder led St. Xavier’s ground game with 72 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.  Sam Taylor carried the ball eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown.  Desmond Ridder completed 14 of 21 passes for 111 yards.

Bracken County vs. Paris

Bracken County came from behind to win what could arguably be considered the biggest win in program history by a score of 43-41.  Paris led 14-7 at halftime and actually led 35-27 early in the final quarter.  Bracken County tied the score at 35-35 on a 39 yard touchdown pass to Nick Parker and a two point conversion run by Austin Stubblefield with less than seven minutes remaining in the game.  Bracken County got the ball back on a Tristan Bishop interception and took the lead on a three yard run by Griffin Appleman and another two point conversion run  by Austin Stubblefield to make the score 43-35 with 3:12 left in the game.  Paris stormed back and pulled within two; 43-41 on a four yard touchdown pass from Aaron Maggard to Jekobi Wells with 44 seconds left on the clock.  Paris’ attempt for the two point conversion failed as Maggard’s pass was not handled by the potential target and fell incomplete.  Paris attempted an onside kick but Bracken County came up with the ball and the celebrations began for the Polar Bear fans.

Bracken County improves to 5-1 and has avenged three losses from last year’s schedule as they have defeated Harlan, Bath County, and Paris who beat them by a combined margin of 121-21 last season.  It looked like they would have to wait another year to avenge the Paris loss as the Greyhounds actually led 28-13 with five minutes left in the third quarter.  However Bracken County stuck with their punishing ground game and that coupled with a combination of Paris turnovers and the late two point conversion pass that bounced away from the intended target Bracken County escaped with a hard earned victory.

Nick Parker led Bracken County’s ground game with 136 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.  Tad Fisher carried the ball 16 times for 93 yards and a touchdown.  Griffin Appleman added 61 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries.  Trey Deaton completed four of eight passes for 120 yards and a touchdown with one interception.  Nick Parker, Logan Teegarden, Dakota Wachter, and Griffin Appleman each caught one pass for 39, 33, 25, and 23 yards respectively with Parker’s going for a touchdown.

Eric Johnson led Paris’ ground game with 24 yards on four carries.  Aaron Maggard completed 15 of 21 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.  Eric Johnson caught five passes for 87 yards and one touchdown.  Jekobi Wells added five receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown.  Jacques Dumphord added four receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown.  Jordan Davis added a 22 yard touchdown reception.  Jekobi Wells also scored on a 59 yard punt return.

The list does not stop here as there were several other players at all age levels who impressed today, I just mentioned a few.  The skills, attitudes, and work ethics were apparent as this was a very busy day and all the girls worked extremely hard.  Also, a shout out to the parents who are the unsung heroes at these events and I know from experience these bleacher seats get hard after a ten hour day.  I will be releasing a complete event report later this week.
