Madison Central vs. Somerset (Girls)

Somerset High School

Somerset, KY

December 5, 2016

Madison Central coach Robert Cooksey started the following lineup:  5-10 Sr. Charity Mack, 5-10 Sr. Lindsey Johns, 6-0 Sr. Mallie Cornett, 5-4 Jr. Bailee Vanover, and 5-7 Sr. Kasi Schneid.  Somerset coach Lindsay Prather countered with 5-9 Jr. Makaila Wilson, 5-6 Sr. Emily Vaught, 5-7 Fr. Tatyana Brown, 5-1 8th Grade Addi Bowling, and 5-5 So. McKenzie Clouse.

Madison Central lost a heart breaking 52-45 decision on the road in a game that had more twists and turns than a good mystery novel.  Madison Central opened up hot and led 15-6 in the first quarter and closed out the quarter with a 17-12 lead.  Lindsey Johns had 12 points in the quarter and Mallie Cornett blocked two shots.  Madison Central’s old nemesis came back to hurt them as Somerset recorded three treys in the first quarter.  Madison Central was clinging to a 20-17 lead with 5:17 to go in the half when Mallie Cornett picked up her second foul on what appeared to the visiting fans to be a clean block.  Cornett went to the bench and Somerset went on an 11-0 run to complete what was actually a 16-0 run to go from a 20-12 deficit to a 28-20 lead with 2:28 to go in the half.  The half ended with Somerset holding a 31-23 advantage.  Somerset’s Makaila Wilson led Somerset with 17 points including four three point baskets.

Madison Central rallied in the third quarter to pull within 4: 40-36 at the end of the third quarter.  Lindsey Johns had 19 points at the end of the quarter and Mallie Cornett attacked the boards and had recorded 10 rebounds by the end of the quarter.  Somerset was paced by Makaila Wilson who now had 21 points and Addi Bowling had connected on three three points through the first three quarter.

Madison Central continued to battle back and tied the game at 44-44 on a layup and free throw by Mallie Cornett with 3:13 left in the game.  Madison Central’s Charity Mack appeared to steal the ball on the next possession but the officials ruled she fouled in the attempt and Somerset got the ball.  The Briar Jumpers went on an 8-1 run to close out the game and secure the victory.  Despite some tough luck on close calls Madison Central battled back but gave up seven three point baskets and turned it over 15 times which proved to be too much to overcome tonight.

Somerset shot 36.4% from the field including seven of 25 from the three point line.  The Briar Jumpers connected on five of eight free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 15 Madison Central turnovers.  Madison Central shot 29.4% from the field including two of 10 from beyond the arc.  The Indians connected on 13 of 22 free throws, pulled down 46 rebounds, and scored five points off six Somerset turnovers.  Madison Central was outscored 13-2 on bench scoring tonight.

Makaila Wilson led Somerset with 23 points including four three point baskets, nine rebounds, and four assists.  Addi Bowling added nine points on three three point baskets.  5-9 Sr. Kaitlyn Johnson came off the bench and came up big with eight points and nine rebounds.

Lindsey Johns led Madison Central with 21 points and six rebounds.  Mallie Cornett added nine points, 12 rebounds, and two blocked shots.  Bailee Vanover recorded nine points, nine rebounds, and three assists.  Kasi Schneid added three points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Charity Mack pulled down eight rebounds.
