*** TIPS AND TACTICS ***
- When flipping, prepare for a strike by keeping your rod pointed at the spot where your lure entered the water. Maintain a little slack; jerking on a tight line generally doesn't allow the hook to penetrate the fish's mouth.
- Lizards crawled onto a spawning bed drives big bass crazy. Peg a lightweight sinker to the nose of the lure, cast the bait beyond the bed, then slip it into the nest, twitching the lizard occasionally while keeping it fairly stationary.
- Add noise to soft-plastic lures by inserting glass or plastic rattles into the lures head section and reseal the hole, using a lighted match. In dingy water, use two rattles to produce more racket.
- Downsize crankbaits during spring. Tiny diving plugs frequently draw strikes from bass that ignore larger versions. Such miniature baits are usally more effective when fished on 6-pound test line, make long cast and use a slow reteive.
- When motoring from one fishing spot to another, reduce spinning line twist by trolling your line-without a lure-behind your boat. If fishing in a river, you can accomplish the same thing by allowing your baitless line to float downstream for a few minutes.
- To protect hands from cold and wet conditions, wrap self-fusing silicone tape around reel seats of spinning rods. This type of tape conforms to the hand and offers a comfortable grip no matter what the weather condition. And when removed, it wont leave handles sticky.
- During early spring, the best spinnerbait action may occur at midday, as the sun begins to raise the water temperture. Find windblown areas in bays and creeks with cover, stained water, and baitfish activity.
- When fishing in ponds, position a small spit-shot about a foot above your plastic worm. Slowly work the lure in shallow areas, casting parallel to the bank. Crawl the worm along bottom or pull it through cover and allow it to sink.
- Line loops are a major source of spinning-reel casting problems. To prevent theses nuisances, develop the habit of lifting your rod tip sharply prior to retrieving line. This straightens the line and removes the slack that causes loops.
- Dont fall into the trap of fishing crankbaits at the same speed all the time. If you're not getting strikes, try cranking faster, slower or using a stop-and-go retrieve. The action you give the lure can be as important as the color you use.
