Terrorists are Scabs
There's been a lot of controversy over a United Arab Emirates company slated to manage six major U.S. ports

There have been attempts to allay concerns over Security issues.

Companies like P&O don't provide security at the ports The US Coast Guard and Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement do. For instance, in New Orleans, P&O is one of eight terminal operators responsible for marketing the port, signing agreements with shipping lines, hiring labor, loading ships, and moving cargo.

But P&O has no responsibility for security. "We have our own police force, harbor patrol, customs officers, and Coast Guard," says Chris Bonura, spokesman for the Port of New Orleans. "That won't change no matter who is operating the terminal."

Still there are concerns that a MidEastern Company would make it easier for terrorists to infiltrate.

There is a simple solution. A clue to that solution can be found in this statement.

Security Programs, Unions Would Stay at Ports

And Michael Seymour, head of North American operations for Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., the British firm being bought by the UAE firm, said the workers handling security in U.S. ports are supplied by longshoremen's unions -- an arrangement he said would remain in effect. "So it doesn't make any difference whether we are their employers, or other terminal operators are their employers," he said.

There you have it folks all that is required would be to point out to the Longshoremen's Union that Terrorists, are not Organized Labor!

You think the ILA (The International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO,CLC) is going to allow SCAB Labor on the Docks? HAH! you obviously don't know much about their History!

No, you can forget about Customs, the Coast Guard, Homeland Security, the FBI's Anti-Terrorism Division, I will put my money on the Union members of Longshoremen's Locals. You just whisper the term scab and they will rally like no Federal Civil Service Employee ever thought of.

So there is not much to worry about,---- Uh unless Al-Qaeda petitions to join the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations). That happens? We are totally S&**d.

Carnival of Liberty 34
We get this week's Carnival of Liberty off to an excellent start,
CLASSical Liberalism reminds us that the bedrock of Libertarianism is the Individual and ask us to take a moment to remember two who have passed on in

Rev. Edmund Opitz (2/11/1914-2/13/06)

"There is a place for government in the affairs of men, and our Declaration of Independence tells us precisely what that place is. The role of government is to protect individuals in their God-given individual rights. Freedom is the natural birthright of man, but all that government can do in behalf of freedom is to let the individual alone, and it should secure him in his rights by making others let him alone."--Ed Opitz"

and

Dr. Paul L. Poirot (7/23/1915-2/17/06)

"The only security any person can have lies within himself. Unless he is free to act as an individual, free to be productive in his own behalf, free to determine what part of that production he will consume now and what part he will save, and free to protect his savings, there is no chance that he can find security anywhere.--Paul L. Poirot. The Pension Idea"

Next we go to the other end of the spectrum, our youngest citizens, and Brad Warbiany at The Unrepentant Individual presents Threat of Teachers Unions reminding us that threats to Individual Liberty can be both Foreign AND Domestic.

"Neal Boortz made a bold statement on his show the other day. He said ?the teachers unions are a greater long-term threat to freedom and prosperity than Islamic terrorists?. I?m guessing he came under some fire for that one, because the very next day, he was talking about it again. He said he?d given it a lot of thought, really examined the implications of his statement, and stood behind what he said.----
Their threat to our freedom is not that of newsworthy attacks on human life, but the incremental destruction of human individualism."

Then we have two members who pose the question, how dedicated are we to Individual Rights when the issue is not popular.

Brad Warbiany at The Unrepentant Individual presents The Ever-Widening Smoking Ban

"The concept of public smoking bans, in my opinion, really gives you an insight into the psyche of a person. This is one of those issues that really separates those who believe in smaller-government-enforcing-their-own-biases from those who truly believe in smaller government and private property rights. I see a true protector of private property rights in a guy like Doug, of Below the Beltway. Doug doesn?t like smoke, to the point where being around it even makes him ill. But he doesn?t accept the idea of government forcing businesses to change the terms of business on their own property.-----
There is a dividing line between conservatives and libertarians, and this is one of the markers between the two. Non-smoking conservatives are usually quick to denounce smokers, and love the idea of smoking bans, because it stops people from engaging in behavior they disagree with. Non-smoking libertarians, on the other hand, may hate walking into smoke-filled bars, but understand that it is the decision of the bar owner to make. We don?t always like the results of freedom, but to a libertarian, the alternative of oppression? even well-meaning oppression? is unacceptable."

David Porter at Pacesetter Mortgage Blog presents Home Ownership only to U.S. Citizens?
David posits that in the hue and cry against Illegal Aliens some are tempted to deny the rights of residents from other Nations who are here legally, contributing to our Society in a positive way.

"Pacesetter Mortgage Blog News - Rep. Bill Dix (Iowa) introduced legislation Thursday that would require proof of citizenship for people who apply for a home mortgage."

Steven Silvers, at Scatterbox at stevensilvers.com, presents Sorting through the SOX drawer. Reminding us that the State's Cure can be worse than the disease.

"Six out of ten public company directors think Sarbanes-Oxley should be either overhauled or thrown out altogether.

Korn/Ferry International's 32nd Annual Board of Directors Study found "a growing contention that the impact of these rules has been negative? Many directors believe boards have become exceedingly wary and are not taking necessary risks to drive company growth. These directors are demanding reform."

Minh-Duc at State Of Flux presents "Public Purpose" Versus "Public Good" reminds us about runaway For the Public Good.
"Fifth Amendment, US Bill of Right:
...nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
There is much controversy over the public use clause, especially post Kelo v. New London. According to Justice Steven, ?Because that plan unquestionably serves a public purpose, the takings challenged here satisfy the public use requirement of the Fifth Amendment."

Yet another example of the State makes thing worse by
Doug Mataconis at Below The Beltway presents The Economic Chickens Come Home To Roost

Richard G. Combs at Combs Spouts Off presents The position of a neutral civilian a request for journalists to forgo self-defense. Another example of who needs the 2cd Amendment?

Solomon2 at Solomon's House presents Public Diplomacy: The Transformational Approach The State Dept is trying out the power of the individual?

"Under the plan outlined yesterday, Rice will expand the U.S. presence by encouraging the spread of new one-person diplomatic outposts, now located in a few cities such as Alexandria, Egypt, and Medan, Indonesia.-----"

Matt Barr at New World Man presents First, do no stupid stuff asks why support Individual Choice so selectively?

"Two doctors refuse to participate in a California execution. Fine and good, but why does the AMA back them and not pharmacists who also refuse to participate in what they consider objectionable medical care?"

Michael Hampton at Homeland Stupidity presents Liberty 101: An introduction to liberty What prompted this exposition?

"Last week I posted the results of a recent poll, asking: What is the proper role of government? As it turns out, this is a hotly debated question, and one that, at least in the U.S., most people don?t at all understand. In fact, one reader?s misunderstanding was so thorough that I couldn?t possibly address it in a single comment, or even a single post"

Chris Meisenzahl at The Amateur Economist & Curmudgeon Blog presents Hayek?s ?The Road to Serfdom? in Five Minutes

lecentre at Centrerion presents On Democracy and Liberalism

"Many people suggest that as democracy spreads around the globe, we will see an emergence of liberal societies. The popular media and the White House make this assertion when suggesting that as democracy spreads through the Muslim world, peaceful and liberal governments will emerge in place of belligerent and oppressive tyrants.---Adolph Hitler was elected democratically. If we want to encourage liberalism in the Muslim world, promoting literacy (as Dr. Syed suggests), freedom of speech, and exposure to various philosophies is probably the best way to do it. Democracy is not synonymous with liberalism."

Dan Melson at Searchlight Crusade presents Bread and Circuses and Entrenched Interests gives us a thought provoking essay on the errosian of personal responsibility that attends looking to the State as a solution to all events.

If I may extrapolate on his thesis he tracks the emergence of those who become so dependent up Authority that they extend the to some even higher authority than the State the defense of the Nation, instead of assuming that responsibility themselves.

I have saved the best for last. mensa barbie at Mensa Barbie Welcomes You presents Shifting Sectarian Violence and relates to us the evolution of Liberty in Iraq. She also points out that evolution is following similiar paths that ours did.

"The more I've come to understand the dynamics here, I realize that it is as if a majority of the Middle Eastern cities are now living within the same circumstances as we did, in our "1920's, 30's, and 40's." It's as if they remain (as is true with many other parts of the World) left behind during evolution of modern lawfulness. We need to understand this, and give them much patience..."

This is the cheery on the sundae. The memory of millions of Iraqis defying the promise of death and dismemberment to cast their first real votes, speaks to the power of the Desire for Liberty as no written words can.

It is the decision of Individuals the creates this power.

I hope you will enjoy the efforts that I have had the honor to present and remember next week, the Carnival of Liberty XXXXV can be found at__ Owlish Mutterings

RALLY ANNOUNCEMENT
Just got this email from the folks at

Rally Notice, Please Join Us!

GROUND ZERO MEMORIAL RALLY

Monday, February 27 at noon

(Church and Liberty St. WTC site)

WHO:  Advocates for 9/11 Fallen Heroes Memorial
* Union and 9/11 family leadership and supporters will also be in attendance

WHEN: Monday, February 27, 2006 at NOON

WHERE: Corners of Church and Liberty Streets at the World Trade Center site

PURPOSE: To publicly protest the memorial as it is currently proposed prior to the March groundbreaking.

UPDATE To give one example of the sheer idiocy of what is happening with the Memorial this from the Take Back the Memorial website.

"We, the undersigned, are writing to address the issue of the random listing of names in the Memorial, an issue that is very painful for an overwhelming majority of September 11th family members. Both civilian families and uniformed rescue personnel families are speaking with one voice on this issue in order to ensure that the Memorial at Ground Zero appropriately commemorates the lives of their loved ones lost during the September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 attacks on our country.

What is so hard about making it easier for people to find the names of their departed loved ones? Why scramble the list?

Carnival of Liberty XXX III- President's Day Edition Is up and running
at Peter Porcupine

When Porcupine submitted his invitation to participate in this Carnival of Liberty, he suggested that since it was President's Day it would be especially appropriate to blog about the Power of Government as it affects Liberty, especially by the Executive Branch.

It will be my honor to Host the Carnival of Liberty XXXIV.

For those who need a refresher this link

will take you to a permanent post explaining what the Carnival of Liberty is, how to submit posts, what is, and is not, acceptable content and what the current hosting schedule for the Carnival is.

I look forward to your thoughtful posts, but that is for next week.

Tobacco is SACRED
The Use of Sacred Tobacco is Our Tradition

Our ancestors have used sacred Tobacco for thousands of years. Tobacco has grown on the North American continent for at least the last 8000 years

Sacred sa•cred (say-krid) adj.

1. Dedicated to or set apart for worship.
2. Worthy of religious veneration.
3. Made or declared holy.
4. Dedicated or devoted exclusively to a single use, purpose, or person.
5. Worthy of respect; venerable.
6. Of or relating to religious objects, rites, or practices.

Tribal Elders are dedicated to keeping tobacco sacred. Tobacco is offered to the creator of the earth, for our land, our fish, our acorns, and our life. The creator gives us many gifts. These gifts must be respected and used in their proper way. Tobacco is a gift to be used in a sacred way with respect.

When used in a correct way with respect and honor it can promote good health and assist with spiritual guidance and growth. Each tribe across this United States has different ceremonial uses. Learn yours, use it, respect it. Our people all have a common knowledge of sacred, respect, and honor. We thank the Creator of Mother Earth for our life. We offer her sacred tobacco in our ceremonies with respect.

****************************************************
I have been following recent news with great interest and I feel that in the spirit of equal opportunity, I as a descendant of the Ani-Yun-Wi-Ya.
(Total of all real people) should point out that I have found the lack of respect and Honor accorded the Sacred Herb of my Ancestors, highly offensive.

Since it appears that in some quarters decisions have been made to avoid offending other religions even to the extent of discarding basic Liberties and Freedoms then my Religion too should be accorded the same respect.

Most of the other Tribes also hold Tobacco with an equal reverence so you offend not just one religion but many.

There are other offenses that are committed through ignorance of Our Ways.

For instance the Dineh find the mere mention of Death of those who have Passed On to be highly offensive. You will kindly cease publishing obituaries and other announcements of these details.

Now it is true, we no long burn buildings, massacre the innocent or take heads (actually we usually just took scalps they are easier to carry), but I am assuming that it is your desire to show respect for other faiths and not just a craven moral collapse in the face of violence?

Like I said we don't do that anymore, we have actually become rather Civilized as you can see assimilated well, we use computers and everything.

But it does appear that New Savages have arisen to take our place.

They remind me of the European Savages who met my Ancestors, they say the same things.

They have the One True Religion, handed down by the
Supreme Being which contains all direction for life and is a Boon to Mankind, All Loving, All Compassionate and All Merciful.

Nice words. The Original People have heard them before and out of the depths of History I give the words of one of Our Chiefs to this claim.

Many proposals have been made to us to adopt your laws, your religion, your manners and your customs. We would be better pleased with beholding the good effects of these doctrines in your own practices,
than with hearing you talk about them".

For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind
Hosea 8 VII

There is a voting demographic group that not much attention is paid to.

I speak of the 25 million or so Vets, their families and their close personal friends.

That is a lot of votes folks and there are some things they hold sacred that it is best not to trample on with impunity..

Now Hillary Clinton's award from the Military Order of the Purple Heart "in recognition of her inspirational leadership and dedicated service to America’s military service members and America’s veterans." is a little ridiculous and might raise a few eye brows but the attack upon upon the MidWest Heros
by the Democratic Party of Minnesota may have repercussions in the next two elections.

They just never learn.

Listen to Col. Stephenson and Judge for Yourself

Yesterday, we interviewed Lt. Col. Bob Stephenson on the Northern Alliance Radio Network. You can listen to the interview here.

The Democratic Party has undertaken an organized campaign to drive Col. Stephenson, two fellow servicemen and the families of servicemen who were killed in Iraq off the airways. The Democratic Party has officially pronounced that Col. Stephenson and his ads are "un-American." That such a thing could happen is almost beyond belief--a Marine officer with more than ten years of active duty labeled "un-American" for supporting America's foreign policy--but it is nevertheless true.

Listen to Col. Stephenson and the two ads and judge for yourself whether they are "un-American."

'Midwest heroes,' my ass

Posted by Laura Barcella at 12:32 PM on February 10, 2006.

A conservative group's foul video claims 'we're making real progress in Iraq, defending our country from radical Al-Qaeda terrorists.'

Odd I seem to recall Joe Lieberman saying the same thing? Notice the high moral ground established with the title?

Yesterday a savvy AlterNet reader named Dan sent a tip about "this UNBELIEVABLE commercial the Administration is airing in Minnesota?Everybody should see this to understand just how far they're prepared to go with the lies."

I find I agree with that statement but I disagree with the direction that the lies are coming from

So I visited the offending (and laughably-titled) website (MidwestHeroes.com). Who are these "Midwest heroes?" Mouthpieces for the Bush regime, disguised as former American soldiers, of course!y explain 'emselves this way: "We're defeating the terrorists and neutralizing the insurgents. Our troops are helping the Iraqi people and their new democracy transition to self-reliance. And in doing so, we're securing America from the threats of radical al Qaeda terrorists?"

Repulsed, I watched the video for myself. And oh my, Dan -- you're right. It's unbelievable.

Merrilee Carlson whose son Sgt. Michael Carlson
fell in battle in Iraq

Clay & M.J. Kesterson whose son Chief Warrant Officer Erik Kesterson fell in battle in Iraq

Pat & Joan Kelly whose son Marine Lance Corporal Bryan P. Kelly fell in battle in Iraq

John Ellsworth whose son John's son Marine Lance Corporal Justin M. Ellsworth, top left, fell on November 13, 2004 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq

Does it seem to you that the Absolute Moral Authority of those who have had children die in combat does not extend to these families?

Who are those disguised as former American soldiers, you might ask?

Robert Stephenson After serving with the Marines for over 20 years, both in active and reserve duty, Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Bob" Stephenson volunteered to go to Iraq to fight the war on terror.

Mark Weber, a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, crossed the border from Kuwait into Iraq in the pre-dawn hours of the war's first day. As part of the Third Corps Support Command out of Fort Des Moines, Iowa, Weber and his troops operated an Assault Command Post that opened up captured enemy air bases on the run and provided close logistical support for infantry and artillery units as they raced across central Iraq towards Baghdad.

Marcellus Wilks
Marcellus Wilks joined the Marine Corps after graduating from West Des Moines Valley High School in 1988. He comes from a family with a strong military tradition***************************
Wilks is proud of his career and particularly of how he performed at a high standard and maintained that standard throughout his 18 months in Iraq.

There you havc the disguised American Soldiers and the UnAmerican Families of Fallen Servicemen, not all of them, just some of them

"The media only reports the bad news," some white dude in a suit informs us while 'patriotic' music surges. "But we're making real progress in Iraq, defending our country from radical Al-Qaeda terrorists who want to destroy America, beginning in Iraq? You'd never know it by the news reports, but our enemy in Iraq is Al-Qaeda, the same terrorists who killed 3000 people on 9/11, the same terrorists from the USS Cole, Madrid, London, and many more?"

Watch for yourself... then feel free to Puke. Rinse. Repeat.

While we watch their video or read you ranting screed?

The website is part of the Progress for America Voter Fund ("PFA-VF", a conservative advocacy group that wants to "reduce the lopsided advertising advantage that liberal 527s have on the campaign trail today."

For an alternate take on "midwestern heroes," visit Al Franken's Midwest Values PAC.

Norway Criminalizes Blasphemy?

Norway had its brief, shining moment of resistance. Not Sweden. Among the European leaders who have insisted firmly in recent days that their nations enjoyed free speech – only to insist even more firmly that that right must be exercised "responsibly" – was Swedish foreign minister Laila Freivalds, who, responding on February 9 to a Muhammed cartoon in the newspaper of the right-wing Swedish Democratic Party, didn’t just call for "responsibility" but enforced it, sending the Security Police to close down the party website. "It is frightful," she sniffed, "that a small group of Swedish extremists can expose Swedes to a clear danger" – as if it were the Swedish Democrats, and not Islamic extremists, who were threatening violence. Lately, many Europeans have sought to explain to enraged Muslims that democratic states cannot silence the free expression of ideas; Freivalds appeared determined to show that in Sweden, at least, this is no longer the case.

And so the Jackboots of Security Forces are heard marching to support of Facism. Free Speech is no more, only approved speech remains.

Islam Online says Norway Criminalizes Blasphemy

Ban Blasphemy

Qaradawi called anew on the United Nations to adopt a resolution banning blasphemy to head off similar incidents in the future.

He also urged the European Union to criminalize blasphemy against any religion, including pagan religions.

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is pressing for a ban on religious intolerance to be part of the bedrock of a planned new United Nations human rights body.

Qaradawi pointed out that there is a difference between freedom of expression and freedom of insulting.

"Freedom of expression is all about expressing an opinion. In the cartoons case, there is no opinion or counter-opinion," he said.

The Norwegian delegation assured the renowned scholar that Article 135-A of the Norwegian Penal Code orders a maximum penalty of three years in jail for publishing articles mocking religions or ethnic groups.

So after a hiatus of how many Centuries the Inquisition returns to Europe.

Next I guess Apostasy will be Outlawed?

Will we Stone Heretics in the 21st Century Dark Ages or just Burn them at the Stake?

If Norway's Blasphemy Law is only used to prosecute those defaming Islam, but never Muslims defaming Jews or other Religions does that make Norway an Islamic State by Default?

You hear the phrases these days, "Must Read", "Daily Read" applied to some Blog or Pundit.

Before Blogs and the Internet really took off I had Must Reads, and Daily Reads, for many years one of the major ones was Mike Royko of the Chicago Tribune.

"His columns often targeted city hall, and other bullies who pushed around, as he put it, the people without clout. Information on his life and career.'

You can keep your Cronkites and your Rathers, Royko is the one I remember from that era.

A newspaper man of the Old Style, cigar chewing whiskey swilling shoot'em right between the eyes Mike Royko of the Chicago Tribune.

Mike could never be confused with Political Correctness, I recall after some public figure, I think it was Ann Landers got into a lot of hot water for using the word Polack and the current Pope in the same sentence, Royko who was of Polish descent himself wrote a BLISTERING article pointing out to the ignorant, that the Polish word for someone from Poland WAS Polack.

Of course in a time when MADD was coming into their own the whiskey swilling did have eventual consequences. Mike got himself a DUI.

Which was big news, an old style newspaper man had one too many.

So there came the day, the hearing and as Royko walked down the steps of the Court House, afterwards a perky little blonde media figure, cameras running, rammed a microphone in the direction of his face and asked, with a big bright smile,

"Mr Royko! Can you tell us what just went on in there?" (Like NO ONE watching had ANY idea?)

Mike looked down at her and replied.

"You are supposed to be a reporter, isn't that your job. Then walked right by leaving her standing there with her mouth open. ;-)

Alas there are not too many Mike Roykos left anymore, but there are plenty like the perky little media figure.

You know the ones I mean. You have seen them in Press Conferences. They don't ask questions, they make policy statements.

They sometimes seem like a flock of Chicken Littles running around flapping their wings cackling, "The Sky is falling, the SKY is FALLING!"

Then when it doesn't fall, they find something else to get hysterical about, in the certainty that the American People will not remember that they were hysterical about the complete opposite thing happening not to long before.

Recently instead of Chicken Little the Washington Press Corps has been acting like a flock of Broody Hens having a Hissy Fit, because someone hasn't given THEM the eggs. That is what reminded me of Mike Royko's famous statement, "you are supposed to be a reporter, isn't that your job?

It seems the VP was in a hunting accident and he did not rush to tell THEM. Instead a report was filed with the local Sheriff and a local News Paper was given the story! COVERUP!!!!!!!

Oh and Scott McClellan it turns out knew that one of the pellets entered a blood vessel and caused a cardiac problem and HE did not tell the Press!

Let me see if I understand this, the Press is demanding that a Government Spokesman deliver to them confidential medical information of a Private Citizen??

Oh and to add insult to injury the VP gave an exclusive interview to Brit Hume of Fox News,.

Now that was a real surprise wasn't it?

Michele Malkin has much more on this latest development in FOX DERANGEMENT SYNDROME
