Live From Music Row
Dallas & Marty

Dallas: In the studio with us, it's Patty Loveless
Patty: Hello! Thank you!

Dallas: Welcome to the show, it's so good to finally meet you.
PL: Well it's nice to meet you too, Dallas

Dallas: Congratulations on your two CMA nominations today
PL: Aww thank you, well it's kind of combined into one if you stop and think about it. It's a vocal event. Of course we are talking about Vince Gill and myself are up for that on "My Kind Of Woman/My Kind Of Man". And also "Same Old Train". You know, "Same Old Train" is sort of reminds me of the first CMA award that I got to take home and uh, I believe the year was like 1993, and it's kind of ironic that Pam Tillis is on this very record "Same Old Train" because she was on a record with me of George Jones; it was called "Rocking Chair".."I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair" and there was a bunch of us on that too. So that was the first one that I..really of CMA that I got to take home. And you know when I stop to think about it, I thought wow, I felt like I only sung about one or two lines in that and I got to take home this award!

Dallas: And you got a Grammy for that one as well.
PL: Yes, I did

Dallas: So that was exciting
PL: Yeah, that's my first Grammy too (laughs)

Recieving the CMA Vocal Event of The Year
1998
Dallas: Really?
Dallas: Well, obviously Vocal Event category is very lucky for you because you are the reining Vocal Event with George Jones.
PL: Well, George Jones is one of those people that you know, an artist, that we are always in awe of ..any of us that are in country music..or any form of music..we just think he is amazing. And to see "Choices" there, I'm just thrilled to death for him. George, he just keeps on goin'

Dallas: Well my favorite the song was "You Don't Seem To Miss Me" for the Vocal Event last year and my favorite was what you said (laughs) when you won the award..wanna tell everyone again in case they missed it?
PL: (laughs) We talkin' about last year?

Dallas: We're talking about "No Show"
PL: Well he's been known for that..so you know..but from my understanding, I think George was in Florida at that time..maybe watching the tube..and from my understanding..to Nancy and I..we talk a little bit..and said he was very very moved..I think he had tears in his eyes.

Dallas: Aww, she told on you George! (laughter)
Marty: Do you have a special place that you keep those now? Do you..are they above the fireplace?
PL: Any place I can find to put 'em..in every room so I can look!

Marty: Actually you can create a story for every group that way if you have a different award in every room.
PL: Well you know..I'm building a home..um..this is really my dream home..because I've been on the road for so much..really the road has been my home for so many years.I mean, after 13 years I finally decided to take 1999 off and we're building a home in Dallas, Georgia.

Dallas: Cool! I know it well!
PL: You should know it well! But um..we're building a home there..and I'm having a special place probably built for all those awards to show off.

Marty: So you've designed it and you get to kind of call the shots on it.
PL: Well, we sort of kind of got together with an architect that has kind of come up with some ideas about the home..and we had some ideas too..so it's comin' along and I'm thrilled to death.

Marty: Have you hammered a nail? I mean have you been up there throwing some boards up?
PL: Well, I've hammered some thumbs (laughs)

Marty: Nobody wants to hold the nail for you then? (laughter)
PL: No (laughs)

Dallas: Patty Loveless is here with us tonight on Nashville Nights and here's the song that she's up for that CMA award...

Plays MKOW/MKOM

Dallas: We're pretty happy that Patty Loveless is hanging out with us tonight.
PL: Hey, I'll hang out a lot if you give me desserts like this!

Dallas: Well you know..we never had the chance to meet and I wanted to make sure you felt comfortable so we brewed fresh coffee and got carrot cheesecake..do you like it?
PL: Man, what a cake! I want this recipe!

Marty: Then we're flying out after the show to finish your house in Georgia..just to make sure you feel good!
Dallas: Hey, everybody's gonna start wanting to come on this show if they know that!

Dallas: Mike's been patiently waiting on the line to say hello to you..Hi Mike!
Caller Mike: Howdy!
PL: Hello Mike!

Mike: I have a question. I heard you play at the Exit Inn Benefit show.
PL: You were there?

Mike: Yes, I sure was ma'am
PL: Well, it wasn't..as far as I know..it wasn't a benefit..it was a writers' night

Mike: It wasn't a benefit..I'm thinkin' of next week.
PL: Well, Mike I sure am glad you were there. Did you enjoy it?

Mike: I wanna know..is that song going to be on your next album? Because it was kickin'!
PL: Well thank you! Now I might consider it. Do you think it's a hit?

Mike: Yeah, I really do!
Dallas: Now you guys are teasing us!
Mike: No, I'm not teasing at all!
Dallas: No, I want to know what song it was
PL: Well there was this song that my husband and I - and also Kostas, we co-wrote together - and my husband talked me into comin' out and singin' at Exit Inn last night and he was playin' in the band for all the writers and the songs that were being played. And the name of the song was "When You Kiss These Lips".

Dallas: It was pretty hot Mike?
Mike: Oh man it was..you know..I'm legally blind so..my ears pick up more..but it was..he couldn't see..he could just vision..you know..it was just sexy, you know.
Dallas: I think you got a thumbs up from Mike.
Mike: I just want to say one more thing: My hat's off to your husband ma'am. I think he is just a producer, but from listening to him..last night..step up on my hat..
PL: Well Mike thank you for saying so. He's such a great bass player and I wish he could do more things like that more often..and I love to watch him play..and I love to hear him play..especially when he's backin' me up..and I got something for you Mike..here it is..(Patty smacks a kiss)

Mike: Thank you very much..you didnt have to do that..you're a sweetheart..
Dallas: Well, we're glad you called in Mike.
Dallas: It's interesting that Mike brings that up because you and Emory - your husband, Emory Gordy Jr., who is also your producer - have been in the studio working on a new album that is set for the year 2000...February is it?
PL: Yes it is. February, the year 2000..and I'm excited about it..we've been taking some time just to kind of write together..and also to try and find some songs out there that are...just going to be a lot of fun...there's a lot of songs on this album...that...I can't really give it away yet! I want to...you can see I'm itchin' to...but I can't.

Dallas: Alright then if you are going to tease us like this, then you have to promise us you'll come back when the new album comes out and play a couple for us.
PL: I promise, I'll come back!

Marty: So, who is that whole creative control thing going on? If he's producing and you're the artist, you both write together...obviously, you're together a lot.
PL: Well, you know as far as the writing thing, I am just getting back into it. I was a little shy being out there last night. And the reason for that is...the fact is, I'm a little rusty at writing and I'm slowly getting back into it...and he's been kind of pulling me out of that shyness. I was writing back when I was about 13 or 14 years old. That's when I came to Nashville. I had a lot of songs in my little notebook and thought I knew about the world. You know, at 13 you know it all don't you? (laughs)

Marty: You think you do, sure..yeah
PL: But I became friends with Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton and Doyle and Teddy Wilburn. I was writing for their publishing company...Doyle and Teddy...it was Surefire. But really, the songs that I wrote back when I was a kid, were the songs that got me my deal at the first label I was with, which was MCA. And Tony Brown took a listen to some of the stuff I was writing and fell in love with it...so I'm getting back into it.

Marty: So, it took you a while to get back to...you were so busy, huh?
PL: Well, there's so many great songs out there and so many great writers, and when I started recording songs that other people had written, I was really a little bit nervous about writing my own. Even so, I'm beginning. I feel that there's some words hidden deep inside of me and (whispers) I'm about to let 'em come out!

Dallas: Look out! Well I'll tell ya what, she's got a song that she really came out on earlier this year. We're going to have that for you and more with Patty Loveless, coming up on Nashville Nights.

Marty: You know we were talking about songs a while ago, and obviously if you are just new to country music and you heard Patty do, say one tune - MKOW/MKOM or the duet with George Jones - the cool thing about Patty Loveless is that she's got very different sides. And this song we're about to play - and I've already told you this is my favorite song - talkin' about "Can't Get Enough" and you told me that this is something that you really liked doing too.
PL: Well, you know this is something that shows the side of...the fun side, you know...the real aggressive, in-your-face kind of song and I've been known to do those kind of songs. You know, like "I Try To Think About Elvis", "I'm That Kind Of Girl"...oh gosh, "Blame It On Your Heart" and the list goes on. But I've been known to do the real hard core country traditional..but it feels good to be able to have a variety of music that I do. I was influenced by a variety of music. I mean, I grew up listening to bluegrass and country music...and country music is my roots, it truly is. But my brothers and sisters were older than I and I was listening to a lot of their rock and roll records of, you know...Little Richard and Chuck Berry and of course Elvis for me.

Marty: In your early days, when you were just getting into bands, didn't you do some 70's rock tunes and something like that?
PL: Well, I did. You know, there was a period of...actually around '78, that's when I started getting into doing some rock and roll and workin' in some rock and roll clubs. But I'm glad I did it because it showed me places that my voice could go that I never would have learned...um and I'm glad. It really sharpened my chops up a little bit.

Dallas: Well now you know the story behind the song. I want to hear about how much fun it was to be such a hotty that she was in the video...to this song right here. Talking about Patty Loveless..Can't Get Enough..turn it up..I know you want to!

Plays Can't Get Enough

Dallas: Patty Loveless rockin' it to ya hard on Nashville Nights. "Can't Get Enough"; I love that song!
PL: Can't Get Enough..
Dallas: So now the video...this is so great. Because of course, the new album you have out is Classics. It's all the greatest hits plus a couple more. And you just came out balls to the wall on this one...everything with this song...and the video...you showed off a new haircut...and the video is so flirty and so fun. And you seem like such a shy person...was that difficult for you to do that video?
PL: Oh, if you only knew me.

Dallas: I love that!
PL: It takes a certain director to get it out of me.

Dallas: Really?
PL: Well, Tom Olafont did the video and it was a lot of fun. And it is one of those things where I'm a little shy about showing too much skin or anything. But when they started describing to me about laying on this table and lookin' like I'm in water. I really wasn't in water; it just looks like it. I had a bunch of bubbles all over me and I remember one popped on my eyelash - the bubble did - and my eye started watering so bad and they were trying to dot the make-up and for me to look up at the camera. I was tryin' not to look at the camera and cry. But it looked like I was flirting, but I'm not..(laughter) Yeah, that's what my mailman said to me. You know, he said, "I saw your video the other day" and I said, "What did you think?" He says, "It's sort of flirty!" And his face turned so red. And then the next day he delivered the mail he says, "I'm so sorry!" And I said, "Oh, don't worry about it. It's OK. I think it's kind of neat you said I was flirty cause I really was flirty!"

Marty: Putting your mailman on the spot and embarrassing him.
Dallas: Patty Loveless making the mailman blush!
Marty: Well coming up we're going to put Patty through a lightning round of questions. I haven't done that in a while either so we had to dig up some of that. And also we'll talk about this year's Fan Fair. You were out there with a relatively new artist trying to break him into the music (laughter) and also some interesting CMA stuff that we're gonna all cover when Nashville Nights continues.

Commercial Break(Typing break) lol

Dallas: The current album's out - I know you're working on a new one for February - the current one is Classics. And man everything on here is a hit...except you have a couple of new songs on this. We heard "Can't Get Enough" already, but there is one more on here. Do you think this is going to be a single?
PL: Well... you know, I would love to hear it as a single. Let's just test the waters with it and see what the folks out there think of it and hey, let them decide.

Dallas: Now you were saying that your husband, Emory wrote this song
PL: Right, "I Just Want To Be Loved By You"... and he co-wrote it with Kostas who - speaking of Kostas - wrote my first number one, "Timber". And also he wrote with Harlan Howard, "Blame It On Your Heart". So maybe we can make a hit out of this.

Dallas: Hey, I love this idea! We'll play it for you and you call us and let us know what you think...if it should be Patty Loveless' next single
PL: Hey, let's go

Dallas: I love it! "I Just Want To Be Loved By You". Patty Loveless on Nashville Nights. Check it out!

Plays I Just Want To Be Loved By You

Dallas: Ow, girlfriend getting sassy! Patty Loveless on Nashville Nights. Let's go to the phone and see what the listeners have to say
PL: Oh, I'm nervous now...be kind...

Caller Nicole: I think it should be the next single.
Dallas: Go Nicole!
Dallas: I think this is Martin.
Caller Martin: How ya doing? I like it. It's got a nice blues background to it. Course I think you could probably sing the yellow pages and…(laughter)
PL: Thank you sweetheart, you're wonderful!

Dallas: Thanks for calling Martin.
Dallas: Well, there you go...hey, two for two. You are all over it
PL: Man, I say let's do it!

Marty: It's a done deal now. Everybody likes it, Nashville Nights is all over it...there you go Patty
Dallas: We'll just call Epic Records in the morning and tell them that Nashville Nights made the decision.
PL: Thanks you guys

Marty: Patty, once again we want to say congratulations to you and your CMA nominations.
PL: Thank you.

Marty: And you got a little congratulations you want to give out...
PL: Well, you know there's so many of my friends that have been nominated this year and there's a lot of new faces that have been nominated and it is their time. But the two that I think are just the most wonderful couple is Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and I'm just thrilled for the both of them. And Tim, it's just so amazing. Boy, he's just taken it all away!

Dallas: They are smokin'!
PL: Well it was such fun to sing with him on "Please Remember Me". I mean Faith, when she was doing her record - her recent album that has "This Kiss" - we tried so hard to get a song for me to sing on and it just wasn't quite clicking. But we developed a real friendship there.

Patty And Faith Hill
And I just love the both of them. And Gracie and Maggie...they have such sweet sweet babies. I just love them dearly.

Dallas: Isn't it cool to see those guys. I mean, I don't see how anybody can watch an awards show...or anything, especially when Tim and Faith sang on the ACM award show when she was pregnant with Gracie, I believe it was. And it was like, I think that's going to be a moment that people will remember for the rest of time. It will be one of those clips that is always kept and will be shown in footage over and over again. PL: There's a magic between them. There's something that is definitely there. And when those two are looking at each other you can't cut between them at all. I mean you see it in their eyes and it's a good feeling to see that...when you see them sharing the stage like that.

Dallas: Well, Tim's seven nominations and I believe Faith had four.
PL: Well, you know somebody else I want to say congratulations to is Rodney Crowell and Will Jennings who wrote "Please Remember Me".

Dallas: It must be exciting for Rodney to see that song the second time around really take off
PL: It is. I talked to him about a week ago and he's real thrilled about it. He's a great writer...great artist too.

Dallas: He is. And actually we are going to find out what Patty thinks of some other guys in country music who probably give her a hard time and find out why she wasn't on the golf course today.
PL: Uh oh. I was playin' hooky!

(Commercial Break)

Dallas: Dallas and Marty back with Patty Loveless and Mcfly has pulled out a lightning round. It has been a while! You get to put Patty Loveless in the hotseat.
Marty: Well, we have a special guest tonight and when they are way up there on the special scale, they get special questions. These are just rapid fire questions; you just give me rapid fire answers right back.
PL: OK, I will give it my best shot.

Marty: Have you ever thought of going by Peppermint Patty Loveless?
PL: Mmm maybe..yeah, sure..

Marty: Have you really actually ever tried to think about Elvis?
PL: Many times.

Marty: Who is a better golfer: Vince Gill or Tiger Woods?
PL: Oooooh, I'm in trouble! I better say Tiger Woods. Sorry Vinny!

Marty: Just a couple more questions on that..do you think you could beat Vince at a putt-putt course?
PL: Absolutely not.

Marty: If he was blind folded?
PL: Absolutely Not.

Dallas: Wow!
Marty: Alright, fine...have you ever had a dream where you were falling..falling..falling..?
PL: Um hum...and I'm still falling..

Marty: I was just wondering (laughter)
Marty: Have you ever done the Hand Bone in concert?
PL:(Laughing) The hand bone?? No, can't say I have.

Marty: You know what that is don't you?
PL: Yes, of course I do. (laughing)

Dallas: Maybe we can get her to do it live tonight?
PL: Groans

Marty: Ever watch one of those "Ernest" movies?
PL: Yes.

Marty: Which one? Do you remember?
PL: I just know they all sound…well all of them were titled Ernest..

Marty: What's more important in a Nascar race: track position or tire mileage?
PL: Tire mileage.

Marty: OK, this one is important. Have you ever in your lifetime, performed live on stage, that YMCA song?
PL: (raises voice an octive) Lord no.

Marty: Good answer.
Dallas: She passed! (laughing)
Dallas: So the final thing...why weren't you at The Vinny today? You and Vince, pretty good friends travelling all over..
PL: And I want to stay friends!(laughter)

Marty: That's a pretty good answer!
Dallas: That IS a good answer! Do you golf?
PL: I don't golf. That's how come I said I want to stay friends!

Marty: Are people going to see you? Do you have any more shows? I know you're not officially touring. You're doing some dates with Vince. Do you have any more left?
PL: I'll probably be doing the Opry sometime and maybe some special television appearance and things like that. But I won't be hittin' the road till next year.

Dallas: Well we so enjoyed meeting you and having you here. And the invitation was open and sincere when the new album comes out, please come back and share it with us.
PL: Oh I'd love to...and I have a question: Can I take the cake home with me?

Dallas: Absolutely!
PL: All of it? (laughing)

Dallas: Absolutely! It's yours! I think she liked it!
Marty: So right around February people should be hearing some new stuff from you, right?
PL: They should.

Marty: Roughly somewhere around there.
PL: Yes.

Dallas: Patty Loveless on Nashville Nights.
PL: Thanks guys!
