Vicar of Christ

 BASIC R.C.BELIEF


Vicar means deputy; one who takes another's place. The pope is called the Vicar of Christ as the Head of the Church on earth.

From Our Sunday Visitor, 3/29/98, "Who is the real vicar of Christ?

"Q: I thought the pope is the vicar of Christ. My pastor says all bishops are vicars of Christ. Which is correct?

"A: Both you and your pastor are correct. . . The term is appropriately used of the pope and of all bishops."
