See list of other articles on Mary A village in France where, in 1858 (4 years after Pius IX had defined the Immaculate Conception), the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant girl, Bernadette Subirous, using the title, "the Immaculate Conception." This was questioned for years by Church leaders and finally accepted. Bernadette became a nun and was canonized after she died. Many miracles are said to have taken place at Lourdes. According to the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate, 907 Pasadena, San Antonio, TX 78299 there have been 64 cures at Lourdes recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as miraculous. They began in 1858, when there were 7. The last authenticated cure was in 1970. The most prolific decades were from 1890 to 1910, when 27 of the cures were reported. 49 of the cures were for women; 15 for men. Of the religious, 8 were women and 3 were men.
