EVANGELICAL COMPROMISE

RALPH MACKENZIE, LORAINE BOETTNER, BOB JONES

In his review of Pat Madrid's book, Surprised by Truth, MacKenzie does make a few very good observations about some of the problems with Madrid's converts to Rome. However, he manages to cut down two stalwarts of the faith in doing so.

First to feel MacKenzie's wrath is Loraine Boettner. Mutual friends who knew him in his later years testify to what a genuine, kind Christian Loraine Boettner was.

His book, Roman Catholicism, was referred to as the "anti- Catholic Bible" by Karl Keating. Those of us who are classified by Keating as "professional anti-Catholics" do not want another Bible. However, every Christian mission that is working to reach Catholics with the Gospel is grateful for the work of Mr. Boettner. His contribution to Roman Catholic evangelism has been signal.

MacKenzie says of this author and his work, "Loraine Boettner('s) work on this subject has been largely discredited by thoughtful evangelicals."

(For further information, see Formidable Truth, A Vindication of Loraine Boettner by Rob Zins, Th.M., available from Ephesians 5:11 Catalog .

MacKenzie then writes, "While Catholic bashing was not unheard of (few of us paid attention to Bob Jones Sr.) . . ."

Perhaps MacKenzie would be more of a fundamentalist if he had paid attention to Bob Jones!

IN MEMORIAM

Dr Loraine Boettner

On January 3, 1990, Dr Boettner passed to his eternal reward. Relatives report he suffered from cancer. Dr Boettner underwent years of privation, subsidizing the sale of his books at his own expense. His landmark study entitled "Roman Catholicism" was considered to be the most authoritative work of its kind He was honored for his contributions to the work of Catholic evangelization at the 1989 A.F.E.C. Conference. Perhaps his greatest acclaim came from Catholic apologist, Karl Keating who said "all missionaries to the Roman Catholics are Boettner's disciples."

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints".
