ANATHEMA

"The word (anathema) means a ban or a curse. The formula as used by the Church refers to excommunication, public notice that a person anathematized is at serious odds with the Catholic faith community in what he/she teaches.

This pronouncement does not imply damnation, for only God can judge. One finds evidence of the practice of excommunication in Deut. 7:1; Mt 18:17; Galatians 1:8.
