Seems Like Yesterday
Like a beacon, the last rays of the sun,
Illuminate the tree tops in the distance.
Standing on my front porch,
Looking out across the town,
I know you're just beyond those hills.
I wish I could find a way to see beyond the trees,
And somehow look into your soul.
After all we shared, is there at least a spark,
Left of the flame that once engulfed our hearts?
It seems like it was only yesterday we were in love.
I wonder if you ever think of me,
'Cause I can't help but reminisce about you.
Memories like home movies,
Still flash through my mind every day.
Against my will, the scenes play on,
From the time we first met,
To the last time we were together.
I can practically retrace every step we made,
On the three dates we managed to accomplish.
Seems like just yesterday you were still mine.
I can still feel the nervous sort of dread of our first date,
And the disappointment when it was over.
I can still feel the warmth and smoothness of your skin,
As our fingers intertwined for the first time.
I can still hear your voice calling out for me,
It continuously echoes in my heart.
I can still feel my heart flutter,
As it did every time you came into sight.
And I can still smell your favorite perfume,
'Cause it all seems like just yesterday to me.
Do you ever think of all the times we spent together?
How we used to talk from sunset to sunrise?
Remember how time would stand still,
Every time we looked into each others eyes?
We had such great chemistry then, we were so in love.
The feeling we got just by sitting side by side,
Was enough to melt the hardest of hearts.
Out of the billions of people in this world,
I knew in my heart, you were my one true soul mate.
Seems like it was only yesterday my world was perfect.
I also think back to the days when you wanted to die,
But you told me just knowing that I was there,
Was enough to dry the tears from your eyes.
Do you remember how we used to joke around?
And how I always told crappy jokes trying to make you laugh?
You said I made you smile even on your worst days;
Those words alone meant everything to me.
Making you laugh and smile was more than just flirting-
It was from your happiness which my own happiness sprung,
And it seems like just yesterday I was the happiest person on Earth.
Can you recall when things started going wrong?
Seemed that everything that was once so perfect in our hearts,
Started crumbling in our hands.
I denied it until the truth hit me like a ton of bricks.
Do you remember what you said to me when you left?
The painful words that still haunt me today?
How your love had been a lie,
That your heart really belonged to someone else?
Seems like just yesterday the light that used to be my guide,
Left me standing in the dark.
Do you remember coming back seven months later,
Saying your lies had been a lie,
Resurrecting all the pain and confusion,
I'd been working so long and hard to forget.
You told me you've always loved me,
You said I was still your world and you couldn't live without me.
You put on your most convincing act,
To try and win back my love and trust.
Seems like yesterday you tried to drag me back under your spell.
Seems like today you succeeded.
