Use a mixture of Testors tube and liquid cements...just squeeze a little (1/4" or so) from the tube onto a piece of aluminum foil pressed into a milk jug cap (or other) and add a few drops of the liquid cement. Use a craft stick to mix them. The liquid cement eliminates the strings, and the tube cement adds strength to the mixture. This also dries faster than liquid cement. As with any new technique, try this on some scrap first to get a good, workable consistency.

While working at my modeling bench, I drape an old bath towel across my lap. This usually catches the small parts that I'm always dropping. And, it makes for a good hand wipe. I use a dark colored towel so that light colored parts show up better.
