ROCKY
The first movie really caused the whole Rocky series to take off. The cause of the success is that the movie really wasn't about boxing at all. Sure there were many scenes with him training, and the ending fight, but the majority of the movie focused on a shy man trying to court a shy woman. Even the ending proves this when they really don't make it a point to tell us Rocky lost the fight. In those final moments we see Rocky profess his love for Adrian. I can usually get my girlfriend to watch the first movie because it is mostly a love story.
The critics loved and respected this movie awarding it "best picture". It is the only movie of the Rocky series to garner a major award.
The Story Of ROCKY
Sylvester Stalone came up with the premise for Rocky while watching an unknown brawler, Chuck Wepner, nearly go the distance in a Muhummad Ali tune up fight. Inspired Stalone stayed up for three days straight penning the screenplay. Stalone was offered a hefty sum for the script but he had one condition, he was to be the star. Some studios didn't look favorably on this and it was a tough sell. Stalone's mother -a psychic- told her son to stick to his guns and he would be a success. Mom was right.
