ANCIENT GREECE

 

You will complete a project notebook of our studies of Ancient Greece. You will need to have a three-ring binder in which to store your work. A well-organized notebook is expected. This project will count as two test grades. During the unit, different deadlines will be given. Please check your calendar for due dates. Late work will be accepted only if you are absent on the original due date. There will be no exceptions.

Your completed notebook will include the following items:

a. Two items from the Writing Section

b. Three reports from the Research Section

c. All completed worksheets from class assignments(you will need two sections for this part. one should be labled Social Studies Class and the other one English)

d. Definitions of all words given in class

e. Extra Credit sheets

You will find the requirements at the beginning of each section.

Section one: writing

You are to pick two different writing assignments. You will receive not only a grade for these in your final notebook, but you will also receive a grade in English class as well. Your writing pieces must follow all of the writing process steps. Each writing assignment will count as twenty points in your finished notebook.

Write a travel brochure about Ancient Greece. Suppose you worked for a travel agency in Greece. Your job involves writing a brochure that encourages tourist to visit. Your aim would be to make Greece sound attractive to tourists with different interests. Think of descriptive words that would make readers want to come. Two topics that must be included are the geography and climate of Greece and important people and achievements for Greek culture,

Make an edition of The Mount Olympus Press. Your newspaper should include a front page, business section, editorial page, and sports section. You may want to draw cartoons that the ancient Greeks might have enjoyed. Here are some suggestions for the newspaper’s section: Business Section--Include want ads for jobs, lost and found, or items for sale/ The ads may either be placed by the gods or by mortals. Editorial page--Include letters to the editor, written by Greek citizens and gods, expressing their opinions about a variety of issues from taxes to the price of food. An advice column can be included in which the gods and goddesses give advice or grant favors. Sports Section/food Section--Include news related to Olympic events and have students draw ads featuring sports equipment used in the events. Solicit recipes for "food fit for the gods". This may be a group project with no more than three to the group. Before beginning this as a group, you must meet with me.

Make a Award for Hercules. Prepare a speech telling why he deserves the award. Be sure to include his twelve labors that he performed.

Imagine that Achilles opens a business that makes use of his talents. Write a description of the business and design a magazine advertisement for it.

Write a letter from a Trojan soldier to a Greek soldier telling him why his cause is unjust.

Write a letter to one of the gods or goddesses. Tell that god why you admire them or why you dislike them. Your letter should examples of tasks that they completed to support your opinion of them.

The Gorgons were horrible-looking creatures. Invent a totally-new, terrible, mythological creature. Name your creature and describe it using vivid adjectives. (You may draw your creature for up to 5 pts. extra credit on your notebook) Create an adventure in which a hero must kill your creature.

In the myth about Phaethon, the earthly son of a god requested the impossible of his father and brought about great destruction and his own demise, Apply this same situation to the earthly son of another god, You make up the son, name him, decide which god is the father, and think of an impossible request that the son might make. What terrible fate shall befall him? Write a detailed story.

Demeter was beside herself with grief when Persephone was whisked away to the underworld. Hades, of course felt great joy at having such a beautiful bride. each would have wished a different decision from Zeus: Demeter that her daughter be returned permanently to earth; Hades that Persephone stay forever in the underworld. Pretend that you are either Demeter or Hades. Write a persuasive argument that will convince Zeus that he should honor your wishes as to the fate of Persephone. Remember though, you must not anger Zeus.. Also keep in mind that Zeus hears and decides upon many cases, therefore, you must refresh his memory of what happened to Persephone.

Write a myth to explain a natural phenomena. Some examples are: a hurricane, a tornado, volcanic eruptions , an eclipse of the sun, an earthquake, a tidal wave.

 

SECTION TWO: RESEARCH

You should choose three of the following subjects and write TWO TO THREE pages on each. Each report must use a minimum of three different sources. You must include a complete and correct bibliography for each report. Each report is worth ten points. This makes this section worth 30 points. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT COPYING SOMETHING FROM A BOOK IS NOT DOING RESEARCH.

Section three: Worksheets (Social Studies)

You will be given worksheets to complete during this unit. these will be graded and given back to you. You will need to file these in your notebooks. When the notebook is turned in, I will Average all worksheets together and give you one grade for them. This section will be worth 10 points. I will round your % to the nearest ten and give you that number of points. For example, if your average is 86%, you will have 9 points. If you have a 83%, you will have 8 points.

Section four: worksheets (English)

You will be given study questions and worksheets while reading about myths. You must put the completed and graded sheets into your notebook. This section is worth 10 points and will treated as Section Three.

Section five: Definitions

You will receive a sheet with words to define. The completed sheet must be placed into your notebook. This section is worth 10 pts. This section will also be handled the same as worksheets.

Section Six: Extra Credit

At times during this unit I will give you the opportunity to earn extra credit points. These points will be worth various amounts,. After I have graded the extra credit, you will need to place these into your notebook to receive credit for the final project.
