The Eastern region will be hosting an elk outing on Saturday, Nov. 13 and Sunday, Nov. 14, arriving at noon on Saturday and leaving Sunday afternoon. You will be staying in rustic cabins (conservation camp style) with fireplaces in Robinson Forest. This is an 11,000 acre second growth forest operated by the university of Kentucky and is about 30 minutes from elk country. The cost will be $19.50 for one night’s stay, dinner on Saturday night (fried chicken, roast beef, etc.) and breakfast on Sunday morning (eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, toast, milk, juice, etc.) You will be responsible for bringing your own toiletries, bedding, snacks, rain gear, flashlights, etc.
After contacting David Schindler, wildlife biologist at Cyprus-Amax, he suggested that we come in cold weather because the elk are most active then. We will probably be going out on Saturday and early Sunday morning in an attempt to see them. They enjoy windy, cold days and grazing in the rain. He also cautioned that there is a possibility that we might NOT see elk and has agreed to offer his services for other activities. He suggested a night hike to a fire tower for star gazing and owl calling or maybe a slide show on elk.
November will be here before you know it and I need to get an idea of how many people are interested because there is a limit to the accommodations. Remember that you can bring a guest for their first outing with KNOW and they will receive a $5 discount on KNOW membership for the year 2000. Show your support by attending the KNOW Annual Meeting on November 20 at 12 noon at the KY Department of Fish and Wildlife in Frankfort. This is a very important meeting as we nominate and vote on our leadership for 2000, discuss plans for future adventures, and meet new faces. More details will be available within the next few weeks.
