Lyric Poems that infer mood:
Harlem Night Song
Langston Hughes
Come, Let us roam the night together

I love you.

The Harlem roof-tops
Moon is shining.
Night sky is blue.
Stars are great drops
Of golden dew.

Down the street
A band is playing

I love you.

Let us roam the night together

Blue-Butterfly Day
Robert Frost

It is a blue-butterfly day here in spring.
And with these sky-flakes down in flurry on flurry
There is more unmixed color on the wing
Than flowers will show for days unless they hurry.

But these are flowers that fly and all but sing;
And now from having ridden out desire
They lie closed over in the wind and cling
Where wheels have freshly sliced the April mire.

Here are same examples of formated poems using "I am" at the beginning of each line.

"I am . . .Michelle"
I am groovy, in like a 70's fashion.
I am a tour guide, that sometime leads others down "a long and winding road".
I am a swimmer, a surivior.

I am a striver, a worker, a builder, a creator.
I am loud, but never rude.
I am human, an animal.

I am wrong.
I am right.
I am sad, and even sometimes lost.

I am musical, but not in singing, only in the "song of life".
I am happy, are you?

I am a lover of life.
I am blonde, but only at times, and always in my heart.
I am a mother, a child of God.

I am not a barbie, but maybe a Christy!
I am blue eyed, containing depth.
I am wiser, because I am older.
I am taller.
I am shorter.
I am a lover, hater, fighter.

I am a Pisces, a fish, swimming with one other, round and round, repeating the patterns of life; sometimes improving, sometimes not.
I am happy, are you?

Here is a poem by a student of mine. I am very proud of her work. You can tell she put a great deal of thought into creating this poem.

"I Am . . ."
I am one of many, but still I'm my own.
I am a seeker for bigger and better things.
I am outgoing in many things I do.
I am glad to be a friend especially to you.

I am walking through the long journey of life.
I am sad with the sorrowful pains like a sharp stabbing knife.
I am tall and standing straight.
I am pressed for time; I can't be late.

I am learning life's cruel hard ways.
I am learning that everyone has bad days.
I am praising the one up above.
I am thanking him for all his love.

I am working towards a career of fame.
I am hoping that someday the world will know my name.
I am making new friendships to last a lifetime.
I am growing up in a horrid world of crime.

I am sayng no to things that hurt you, so
I am seeing that the best answer for a wrong is "No".
I am sitting and watching others mistakes.
I am making my own as long as the lakes.

I am speaking for what I think I need.
I am seeing the eyes of evil greed.
I am waiting for the one that's right.
I am waiting for my prince or charming knight.

I am singing a song for all to hear.
I am walking towards the future that is so near.
I am finding new ways and ideas.
I am now realizing I'll never be a math whiz.

I am ending this poem with a gentle phrase.
I am ending this story of a maze.
I am me, yes that is me!
I am me, this is who I want to be.

Here is an example of another "I Am" poem, with a twist. This student used a published poem, and he became the character of the poem. He, then, rewrote the poem from that character's viewpoint.

I am a helpful person, in Arkansaw.
I am lively, daring, and especially, tall.
I am a rover over far away lands.
I am as thin as any cooking pan.
I am an Independent lad, alone all the time.
I am a lonely dude, surrounded by trees of pine.
I am an early person, awake at dawn.
I am wide awake and rarely yawn.

Finally, here is a poem that is enjoyable!
"I Am me"
I am a brother, a trusting, overprotective, but loving part of my family.
I am an athlete, a buff, tough, but I am clearly not the stuff.

I am sweet, and nice, but not like sugar and spice.
I am a living, breathing, part of this earth.

I am leaving from this place not living, not loving, not anything.
I am neat and tidy, but I am not big on fighting.

"I am what I am," is what Popeye said, that is true, because
I am me, as you are you.
I am .

This one is just a great deal of fun!
I am a thug poet, thinking of love when I wrote this.
I am the best.
I am far better than the rest.

I am the "bomb".
I am the man.
I even have a tan.

I am the ruler of all lands.
I am in the sand.
I am the man, with the master plan.

I am not mean.
I am the King.
I am just waking up from a dream.

I am going to prevail.
I am never going to fail.
I am swift.

I am smooth; some people call me "little dude".

On nice pretty paper,
In my mind,
All around, all the time,
Memories we have,
Beautiful stories,
Something you can't forget,
Me in a thought.

In the big blue sky,
Flying high and low,
Coming right at me,
Beautiful butterflies,
A candle in the wind,
A child on a slide,
For the trees,
Blown by the gentle breeze.

In the open sky,
Braking in the wind,
Moving toward me,
An anxious puppy,
A beautiful butterfly,
A shower in the spring,
To the store.
