I have found conflicting taxonomy for this species. Ernst and Barbour list this species as K.s. cruentatum, a subspecies by geographic variation, as per Dumeril, Bibron, and Dumeril, 1851. In other books, however, I have seen it listed as its own species, Kinosternon cruentatum. It ranges in Central America and can grow to 27 cm. This specimen died in captivity.
