Big-headed Turtle - Platysternon megacephalum

The family Platysternidae is represented only by this species. Its head is so large it cannot be withdrawn into its shell. The skull is covered dorsally with a scute and is osteologically interesting. This species occurs in southeastern Asia and its carapace can reach up to 18.4 cm. There are five subspecies recognized. This specimen died in captivity.
