Alligator Snapping Turtle - Macroclemmys temminckii

This the single living species within this genus. It is probably the largest freshwater turtle, growing to 66 cm in length and weighing up to 80 Kg. It is native to the Southeastern United States. Due to overhunting, its natural range has been greatly reduced. It is now protected in all states except Louisianna. This specimen died at a private breeding facility.
