PROGNOSIS |

By: Andrew Chung Sepsis is a very life-threatening disease, especially in patients with weakened immune systems and other medical illnesses. The death rate can be up to 60% for those patients with underlying medical problems. Immediate treatment of antibiotics will favor the prognosis of a septic patient. The antibiotic treatments should begin even before the laboratory results are returned from gram-stain cultures. Two antibiotics are usually given to increase the chances of destroying the bacteria before even knowing the specific bacteria that are causing the infection. After the results are returned from the laboratory, a different antibiotic can be substituted that is most effective against the bacteria causing the infection. Surgery may also be necessary in some cases to eliminate the source of bacteria.
