Fungi

Fungi is the fouth kingdom of life. This kingdom is mostly hetertrophic and most are unicellular but there are a few that are multicellular. There are so many creatures that are named under this catagorie that there are over one hundred thousand identified species.

Three phyla:

1.Zygomycota- most of these species live in soil and feed on decaying plant and animal tissue. Some are even parasites. They commonly contain multinuclei and are Produced through asexual reproduction.

2. Chytridiomycota- these organisms are unicellular to make mycelial thalli. This division was classified by Bartnicki-Garcia in 1970 with the true fungi. But atfirst it was not until studies sequencing of the small sub unit rDNA was done with that mycologist became bold enough to classify this division with the true fungi.

3. Ascomycota- this fungi is about 75% of all fungi. It is also known as sac fungi and is monophyletic.Asexual Ascomycota, such as Penicillium, used to be classified separately in the Deuteromycota because sexual characters were necessary for Ascomycota classification. However, the comparison of nucleic acid sequence, as well as nonsexual phenotypic characters, have permitted the integration of asexual fungi into the Ascomycota.

Here is an example-

Penicillium: this is known for their brush-like spore-bearing structures. Penicillium is a large and difficult genus encountered almost everywhere, and usually the most abundant genus of fungi in soils. Some produce toxins and may cause food to no longer be ediable and even dangerous. But others are bennificial to others.Such as they are used to help rippen cheese and penicillin is also made by this.
