Fungi

A Kingdom of Life

Description

This kingdom is made up of heterotrophic unicellular and multicelled eukaryotic organisms. Fungi organisms break up dead substances and through that they obsorb the nutrient they need to survive. It is unknown how they reproduce.

3 Main Phyla

  • Basidiomycota-
  • These phylum is full of single and muliticelled organisms as well as asexual and sexual. It is full of mushrooms and rusts. They occur in both aqautic and land environments.
  • Zygomycota -
  • This phylum is full of decomposers and insects. They grow looking fuzzy and full of small black or dark colored dots. Thses black dots are called sporangia which are many-celled structures that produce spores.
  • Ascomycota-
  • This phylum is complete with powdery mildews. These fungi's are full of asexual and sexual spores. They are shaped as a tube like body and have a cuped top. Examples are yeast and bakers mold.

Example Animal

Example animal -Amanita muscaria The genus name of this animal is Amanita and the species name is muscaria. It is found anywhere under pine trees such as birch or spruce trees. The Amanita muscaria retrieves nutrients by taking the nutrients from living or dead things surrounding it. Unfortunatley it is unable to get food by photosythesis so that is why it take nutrients from other things. Some interesting facts about the Amanita muscaria is that in the medieval times it was crushed up in milk and sprinkled with sugar to kill flies. This organism is toxic to eat. In the case that it is eaten it can kill the victim quite fast. They can kill by putting toxins into the kidneys and liver. It can be easily found with its bright colors such as red and the white wars on its top. Interestingly they usually grow in clusters and are barely seen all alone.
