Josiah HORNBLOWER

He was a civil engineer and a master machinist in the erection of steam pumping-engines in the Cornwall mines.

Associated with his elder brother, an eminent engineer, with whom he went to Cornwall in 1745 to put up steam pumping-engines at the mines.

He thus became an expert in all that related to mining and machinery, including fire-engines.

He came to America in 1753 at the instance of Col John Schuyler, bringing with him the first steam-engine ever brought to America. It was used for pumping water at the copper mines near Belleville, NJ. Of which mines he was superintendent, 1754-59.

He was a captain in the militia during the French and Indian war.

He opened a store in 1760, and became comparatively wealthy.

At the outbreak of the Revolution be espoused the cause of the patriots and worked earnestly for the colonial forces.

He was a representative in the New Jersey legislature 1776-80, and speaker, 1780.

He was elected to the state council in 1781 and the same year the British troops made a desperate but unsuccessful effort to abduct him on account of his intense patriotism.

He was a member of the state council till 1785.

Delegate to the Continental congress, 1785-86.

Appointed judge of the Essex common pleas in 1790 and held the office until failing health obliged him to resign.
