Barker Memorial Raceway --- The Name

The land that was finally obtained for our Race Track, called Barker’s Farm, was once owned by the late Roy Barker. It was sold by the executors of his estate in the early 1970’s to the Ministry of Transport. It was to be used as a base area for an upper Atmospheric weather station. In 1979, ownership of the Barker Farm was transferred to the Department of National Defence. The GSCRA presently leases this area from the Dept. of Nat. Defence on a yearly basis.

One of three prospectors who discovered the base metal mines at Manitouwadge, Roy Barker grew potatoes here on the farm. A millionaire after the discovery at Manitouwadge. Roy served as a Mayor and Councillor in Geraldton, and supported every organization, in its community work, when needed.

In remembrance of Roy Barker, for all of his work and efforts in his lifetime, the first executive of the GSCRA picked the name Barker Memorial, chosen by Michael Johnston of Geraldton in a contest.

The Geraldton Stock Car Racing Association has worked hard over the past few years to make Barker Memorial a reality. There has been a number of people to whom much is owed for their help in various ways along the path. It is hoped that in the future this land can be bought back from the Government, so that Barker Memorial Raceways may continue with a secure future for the benefit of all who enjoy the sport of dirt track racing in the Geraldton area. The support of the fans and the community of Geraldton at large has been well appreciated and we hope that support gets stronger year after year.
