Description Of Kingdom

These organisms are both unicellular, and mulitcellular. They thrive in aquatic habitats, because of their eating habits and because of their non-aquatic movement capabilities. They contain a membrane bound nucleus and have numerous organelles. Their movement is provided by the flagella. Protists can reproduce mitotically. the primary cellular respirtation is an aerobic process, but some organisms are faculative anaerobes. The Protists are the simplest eukaryotes, but all the organisms within this kingodm are very diverse yet the same in many ways. This kingdom is divided into four groups based on lifestyles, they are the protozoanz, the slime molds, the unicellular algae, and the multicellular alage. Each of these groups have many different unique qualities that seperate them from the other three groups.

3 Phylum's of the Protista Kingdom

The first phylum is the Phaeophyta. The organisms in this phylum can be found in the Northern temperate Zone in the ocean. Their cell walls contain mucilaginous which is a water retaining substances, because of this substances the organisms do not dry up when the tide comes in. Another Phylum is the Euglenophyta. In this phylum the algae is unicellular. They have characteristics of both plants and animals. Their animal like characteristics are the flexible and motile body. Their They live in freshwater, and move by the flagellum. Their plant like trait is that they contain chloroplasts. The last phylum is the Chrysophyta. These organisms also known as the Diatoms are the most numerous of all unicellular algae in the oceans. They have a golden brown accessory pigment in their chloroplasts whihc masks the normal green color of chlorophyll in the organism. The cell wall has two valves, the longer one which acts like the lid for the smaller one, because of this the structure is similar to a box.

1) The Nucleus
2)Contractile Vacuole
3)Food Vacuole
4)Pseudopodium

Amoeba proteus

The Amoeba proteus is an organism of this kingdom that i found to be very interesting. To move and capture their food they use extensions of the cytoplasm called pseudopodia. This organism constantly is throwing out pseudopodia's to try and get food. To ingest their food they surround it with a vacuole and then the food is digested by enzymes, although only after the enzyme has been emptied into the vacuole can digestion actually start. To collect all the excess water from the surrounding cytoplasm and send it outside the body the amoeba uses a contractile vaculoe. To control all these many functions they have a nucleus that contains granular chromatin. Amoeba proteus's usually feed on other protozoans, algae, rotifers, and sometimes even other smaller amoebas. They usually live and can be found in well oxygenated water. Amoebas get their energy from eating rotting vegetation at the bottom of streams, as well as by doing respiration. The amoeba's also breathe through their membrane, which i found to be interesting. It reproduces asexually, it does binary fission.
