Safety Is Our Bussiness~Service is our Goal
• OSHA continues to increase the number of inspections it conducts annually. In FY 2003, OSHA conducted 39,817 total inspections- a 5.9 % increase over the previous year.
• Over the period from FY1999 to FY2003, the number of inspections increased 15.4 % overall. A significant increase in programmed inspection activity contributed to the growth seen in FY 2003, as programmed inspections were up 9.2% over FY 2002 inspections. Programmed inspections focus on high-hazard industries, which have the highest lost-time injury rates. Unprogrammed inspections also showed a 1.8 % increase over the previous year.
•In FY 2003, 83,539 violations of OSHA’s standards, regulations or the OSHA Act general duty clause were found in the nation’s workplaces, an increase of 7.6 % over 2002 and a 10.2 % increase over the last 5 years. The number of willful violations increased 22.1 % over the same time period.
• These increases show that OSHA is targeting its resources accurately to those employers who have the highest injury and illness rates and to worksites where workers are most likely to be injured or killed on the job
