We first see Mat in Eye of the World and find him a farmer in the Two Rivers, close friends to Perrin Aybara and Rand Al'Thor. His role in the group is the mischievous one. He's always getting into trouble or getting blamed for things that he hasn't even done. All because of his reputation in the Two Rivers.
His luck with the ladies isn't too great. He's very flirtatious to them and they respond by brushing him off or walking away,leaving a frowning and sulking Mat.
This leads him to gamble most of his time away after Winter's Night when he left his home to go with Moiraine since the Trollocs were after Mat and his friends. The odd thing about his gambling is that he recieves a new reputation. He's now considered to have "the Dark One's luck" with him since he's always wins everytime he plays. This makes Mat angry because it baffles him as to why even he posses this luck.
He hates the One Power and hates Aes Sedai too.
