White's Tree Frogs

INTRODUCTION

The White's Tree Frog(Litoria caerulea) is perhaps, and in my opinion the best frog to have as a pet or any other herp for that matter. Of course, others like snakes, lizards, newts, salamanders and other frogs, but the White's seems to be to me the best little guys out there for sale right now. They are a calm, docile frog and adults don't seem to mind being held, gently. They always have a smile on their face(hence their other name 'smiling frogs') and their pudgy bodies are buddha-like in appearance(hence their other name 'dumpy frogs').

White's Tree Frogs originate from Australia and Indonesia with some populations in New Zealand of which were introduced by man. They were discovered by J. White, a member of a team of scientists exploring Australia two centuries ago. He named it Rana caerulea(Rana meaning 'frog' and caerulea meaning 'blue') but was then changed to Hyla caerulea and now is called Litoria caerulea. White's occur throughout the northeastern half of Australia and in the northern and southern lowlands of New Guinea but those there are possibly subspecies, which should be bred separately from the Australian species. These frogs, along with other frogs and herps, are no longer available for export out of Australia in hopes to replenish their dwindling numbers. Therefore, the frogs we see in stores are captive-raised, and are healthier and more robust than wild-caught ones.

As a whole, White's are one of the easiest frogs to raise and are the most tame, naturally. On this site you will learn how to keep White's, learn how to breed them and hear from my experiences of raising these adorable frogs. You will see pictures of White's as well as pictures of my own frogs. Enjoy your stay here and open your mind to the wonderful world of the White's Tree Frog!
