Fishburne Drives Once to Theaters

At long last, actor Laurence Fishburne's directorial debut will hit theaters. The Matrix co-star's Once in the Life, a streetwise drama based on his successful off-Broadway play, Riff Raff, will bow in October,[actually it's November 3rd now!] Variety reports.
Fishburne wrote, directed, produced, and stars in the project, which has been his baby since he gained acclaim for it at New York's Circle Rep Theater in 1995. Once in the Life is the tale of a criminal and a junkie who discover that brotherhood can sometimes mean "once in the life, always in the life."
Once also features Titus Welliver (who starred in the stage version), Oz's Eamonn Walker, Annabella Sciorra, and Gregory Hines [and Huey Morgan].
Fishburne was last seen as the morally astute Morpheus in The Matrix, a role he's expected to recap in the film's two upcoming sequels. He received an Academy Award nomination in 1993 for his turn as abusive spouse Ike Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It.

KRS-One, Schoolly D, Guru Tapped For "Once In The Life"

KRS-One, Guru from Gang Starr, Schoolly D, Black Sheep, and Vernon Reid are among the artists that have contributed new or unreleased songs to the soundtrack for "Once In The Life," an upcoming film starring and being directed by Laurence Fishburne.
KRS-One's cut, "Shutupa Yo' Face," will mark his first solo release since the 1997 LP "I Got Next." In the interim, the former Boogie Down Productions frontman has mostly made guest appearances on other artists' records, including Snoop Dogg's "Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told," and Digital Underground's "Who Got The Gravy?" KRS-One has also logged time as an A&R rep for Reprise Records.
For the "Once In The Life" LP, Guru has teamed up with the Brand New Heavies' N'Dea Davenport on "Choices," while rapper Roscoe -- otherwise known as Kurupt's younger brother -- has hooked up with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora for a hip-hip version of "Ballad Of Youth," a song that originally appeared on Sambora's 1991 solo album, "Stranger In This Town."
The soundtrack for "Once In The Life" is due out on Antra records in April, while the film is tentatively due to arrive on screens in the late spring or early summer. The movie is being produced by The Shooting Gallery, the same company that handled "Sling Blade," "Niagara, Niagara," and "Dee Snider's Strangeland."
"Once In The Life" is based on Fishburne's recent off-Broadway play, "Riff Raff," about a heist gone wrong, and also features Gregory Hines, Paul Calderon, and Sue Costello.

From Level Magazine June-July 1999

"I wrote a script for this film that we're probably going to be shooting here in London. It's a pretty good idea. It's got a dead rock star, his widow, a mad scientist and a time machine that looks like a New York cab. It's kind of like Ghost meets Back to the Future meets Bad Lieutenant." Sounds like a pretty straightforward plot to me, but how does someone whose music is so influenced filmically come up with such a mixed bag of reference, and then convince a film company to give them to the money to make it? "Joel (Pront) and I did a video for a song called Big Night Out. It was kind of like Raging Bull and a social critique at the same time. We always try and include hidden meanings in our music, like it you play it backwards and all that. The production company thought we'd made a good job on the video and approached us with a pretty nice sum of money to make a feature film, and that bag of money snowballed into a whole big bag of money - we're gonna take the big bag of money and split it in half. That's half to make the movie, and the other half to have a good time for the next six months. It sounds crazy, but they give you the money up front."
