EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is required of all students if full benefit from the LBlS programme is to be enjoyed. Permission from the school office must be obtained prior to any known absence from school, and all absences must be explained by a note from the parents or guardians. Parents are encouraged not to take children out of school for holidays, as time missed may not always be made up. On returning from an absence a student must report to the Form Teacher with the excuse note.

BEHAVIOUR

LBIS is proud of its student body. Students are expected to behave, both in and out of school, in a manner that will bring respect and honour to both their country of origin and the school. There are positive consequences for appropriate behaviour. Students will be praised. Parents will receive communications about their child's positive progress. Programmes recognize students who are co-operative and considerate of others, work independently, use materials and equipment correctly, are responsible, and follow staff directions. When students disobey school rules, they are given the opportunity to explain their actions and are counselled about appropriate ways to deal with problems. A punishment may also be a consequence. When students seriously misbehave, parents will be contacted. A discipline record describing the problem and the action taken will be on file in the Headmaster's office.

FORBIDDEN ITEMS

Dangerous items such as skateboards and pocketknives, and electronic equipment such as personal stereos and mobile telephones are forbidden on campus. (See also VALUABLE ITEMS.)

LITTERING

Mauritius is a beautiful country and LBIS is fortunate to occupy one of the most attractive sites on the island. Each member of the school community has the right to enjoy its beauty and should expect others to preserve it. There are many rubbish bins on campus and "litterbugs" can expect to spend their free time restoring the campus to its original beauty.

PRIVATE TUITION

Implicit in the choice of LBIS is the parental undertaking not to arrange private tuition of any sort for students without prior consultation with, and specific authorisation from, the Deputy Head. This regulation is imposed in the best interests of the students. EL classes have been included in the weekly schedule. Those who do not need this special attention will be free to take part in other activities organised at that time.

UNIFORM

The school uniform is compulsory for all students and consists of the white school shirt with emblem, trousers, shorts or skirt, white socks and plain shoes or trainers. A change of clothing is necessary if a student engages in PE or strenuous activities during the breaks. During the cool season students may wear the school sweater or jacket (both only available from the School Shop in Candos). Apart from the sweater and jacket, all uniform items can only be bought at school. Students are not permitted to wear privately tailored items of school uniform. Please consult the PE staff about the PE uniform.

VALUABLE ITEMS

There is no need to bring a great deal of money to school and there are no secure facilities available other than the student lockers. Similarly, valuables such as jewellery are discouraged and the school declines all responsibility in the case of theft, loss or damage involving personal property.
