One Final Gift.

I was walking the streets of Paris. I normally do that at night. I don't know why I do it, I just do. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the letter that she had given to me. M. Marius Pontmercy it said. Why should I give him, the man that I love, a letter from her? It's not fair!! She has everything she could possibly want. She has nice clothes, plenty to eat, a warm house to sleep in, and she has Marius. And what do I have? Nothing! No clothes, no food, no house, no-one.

That's not true. a woman's voice said.

"Who said that?"

I did. You're not alone Eponine.

"Who are you? And how do you know I'm not alone?"

I'm your Guardian.

"My what? You're crazy! What do I need a Guardian, or whatver you call yourself, for?"

You need me. It's as simple as that. You need me to tell you that you're not alone, that someone does care for you, and that you must give Marius that letter you are holding.

"You are crazy!! If you know so much about me, then you should know how I feel about him! Why on earth would I ever give him Cosette's letter? Wait don't tell me. 'Because it's the right thing to do'. That's what you were going to tell me isn't it? Forget it!! Just go away and leave me alone!!"

Is that what you think I was going to say? Well you're wrong. I was going to tell you that you need to be at the Barricades tonight. It's VERY important that you be there!!

"Why?"

I can't tell you anything more. Please believe me, and go, now!

"This doesn't make any sense!"

But, the voice was already gone. I think.....

********************************************************************************

I still didn't have any idea as to what was going on, but the voice sounded so urgent that I decided to go to the Barricade. When I arrived, I started looking for Monseiur Marius. That's when I saw the gun aimed at him. I must have stopped the bullet from hitting Marius. How did I know? Because I was bleeding. The bullet had hit me. That's when I heard her voice again.

I'm here Eponine. It won't be much longer now.

"What do you mean? I'm not going to make it, am I?"

No, you're not. But there is still time to give Marius the letter. He needs to see it. You know that. And now you know why you were supposed to be here.

"Yes, I guess I do. I came here to save his life didn't I? I wish he would come!"

He will come. And soon.

That's when everything turned black....

*******************************************************************************

When I finally came to I was in so much pain that it hurt to even breathe. I was aware that some one was holding me, and talking to me.

It was Marius.

"'Ponine, what happened? What are you doing here?"

"I.. had.. to see you..."

"Why?"

"To save your life. There was a gun aimed at you. It's bullet hit me instead".

That's when he started to cry.

"Don't cry Monseiur Marius, I'm glad to be dying... and I have something for you. But before I give it to you, promise to kiss me on the forehead when I'm gone. Promise!"

"I promise!"

"This is a letter from Cosette. Take it. And one last thing Monseuir Marius, I believe I was in love with you...."

I knew my time had come. I felt him kiss me as he had promised. Then I saw someone.

"Are you my guardian?"

Yes. You're safe now Eponine.

And for the first ime in my life, I really did feel safe. Then it occured to me that I didn't know my Guardian's name. I didn't even know if she had a name.

"Pardon me, but do you have a name?"

Yes. My name is Fantine.
