Alfred L. Runyon

19th kansas Cavalry

Alfred L. Runyon was part of an escort of a train to Hays and back about the end of January, 1869. He wrote on February 10 at Fort Dodge, "We made a trip to Fort Hays about two weeks ago. The train which our company was escorting, got snowed in at Big Timbers creek, and did not get into Dodge for eight days. The weather, lately, has been very stormy, and the snow is very deep, in places, between Fort Dodge and Fort Hays, and is consequently very hard on trains, and many a poor mule and broken wagon is 'turned over,' as it is termed by being abandoned.
