Dance Convention Results

2009 Oklahoma/Kansas State Swing Dance Championships
November 6-7, 2009--Oklahoma City, OK
Hosted by Sooner Dance Club

Mr. Kelly's Take: (updated November 12, 2009) The Friday night show went overtime (12:30 a.m. Saturday morning) with the Newcomer Strictly Swing and Novice Strictly Swing starting one hour late (due to much bigger Jack-N-Jills than anticipated)--ouch!
The Saturday show went much better, and it was business as usual for Swing Tulsa Style, who won their 2nd straight club title, 11th out of the last 12 years, and 13th overall out of the 27 OKSSDA conventions--sounds like a dynasty (New York Yankees fans out there?) ;)
This year's convention featured 75 couples who competed in 11 different categories--not including the Jack-N-Jills! Overall, over 100 couples competed this weekend, which is a great turnout in any competition.
Wichita Dance Beat represented themselves proudly, with Ed Guymon making the finals of Newcomer Jack-N-Jill, dancing in Newcomer Strictly Swing with Sandy McCallister, and competing with Denise Lees in Masters Strictly Swing; while Ron Harvell made the Novice Jack-N-Jill finals, took 2nd in Novice Progressive with Cathy Fieser, and also competed in Novice Strictly Swing and Masters Strictly Swing.
Ed and Shirley Parks took 3rd in Novice Progressive, and Will Carlton finished 2nd in Intermediate/Advanced Jack-N-Jill, won Intermediate/Advanced Strictly Swing with Chelsea Rodgers, placed 4th in Male Pro-Am Strictly Swing with Cathy Fieser, and won both Pro-Am Contemporary and Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary, with partners Stevie Scott and Jan Grewing, respectively.
The Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary and Swing Teams only had one entry compete in both those categories, and yes, "Will Power" danced their routine and were well-received by the audience. Other WDB members to compete were Joe Rohlin, Lori Robinson, Lyle and Sheila Hiebert, and Bill Morgan.
Congratulations and shout-outs to all of the competitors and social dancers who supported this year's OKSSDA contest; the 2010 contest is scheduled to be hosted by Swing Tulsa Style in Tulsa. If you missed this contest, you missed a lot. Make plans to join us in 2010!

DALLAS D.A.N.C.E. 2009
September 3-6, 2009--Fairmont Hotel, Dallas

Mr. Kelly's Take: What a show, what a weekend! Dallas D.A.N.C.E. 2009 was one for the record books, as a record 15 entries competed in Novice Traditional on Friday night, and out of those couples, Scott Stuart and Katrina Ostrenski from Brisbane, Australia won; West Coast Swing has exploded overseas, and we're fortunate to have so many new visitors coming to our conventions here in the U.S.
Wichita was well represented as between 20 and 25 people representing the Air Capital came to Dallas this year, with most of them from Wichita Dance Beat, a club that is in its 2nd year but showing promise of greatness. WDB's team called "Will Power" put on the best performance and finish of any Wichita swing team ever at Dallas D.A.N.C.E.; "S Factor" from Dallas barely edged Wichita, but they earned it like champions always do.
Ron Harvell and Cathy Fieser, along with Ed and Shirley Parks, competed in Novice Traditional and were well-received by the fans. They were also on the team, as well as Bill Morgan, Denise Lees, Jan Grewing, Joe Rohlin, Lori Robinson, and Brekly Ellard. Stevie Blakely took 5th in Showcase with Oscar Hampton of Kansas City, and Austin Murrey won Male Pro-Am Traditional with Gayla Huffman (Kansas City)!
Even though Austin lives in OKC now, he'll always be one of us in Wichita (IMHO); way to go to all of you! We can't wait for OKSSDA 2009 in OKC in November; tickets are now on sale through www.okstateswing.com or any OKSSDA member club.
Other highlights included Parker Dearborn and Jessica Cox winning their fourth straight Showcase in Dallas; Kyle Redd and Sarah Vann Drake winning Classic, Matt Auclair winning Champions Strictly Swing with Kellese Key, and Angel Figueroa winning both Cabaret and Invitational Jack-N-Jill.
Finally, Parker Dearborn and Tom Daniell were inducted into the Dallas D.A.N.C.E. Hall of Fame, and Cher Peadon was inducted into the National Boppers Hall of Fame by the National Fast Dance Association.

I'm going to save some space for now and put up the link to the 2009 winners of Dallas D.A.N.C.E. here.

Plan on joining us in 2010 for Dallas D.A.N.C.E.!

2009 USA Grand Nationals
May 22-24, 2009--Renaissance Waverly Hotel, Atlanta, GA

Mr. Kelly's Take: The 15th annual USA Grand Nationals was a great show, put on by shag legends Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee since 1995. This featured a Cabaret division so phenomenal that MC Mario Robau, Jr. said before its awards were announced, "in my 25 years, this is the best Cabaret division I've ever seen." Enough said. In case you're wondering, The Willis Clan (Ashland City, TN), featuring nine children from 3 to 16 years of age, did a Irish dance routine that captivated the audience and earned them the loudest standing ovation of the entire weekend.
This event also had something it had NEVER had in its history--the music and sound going out. This happened on Saturday night before Masters Shag, and co-MC Robert Royston had to fill time by talking for over 40 minutes. The delay itself lasted about an hour, but the crowd was remarkably patient throughout the difficult process of correcting the situation.
In spite of that, the big winners were the dancers themselves. Jordan Frisbee and Tatiana Mollmann won Classic, Arjay Centeno and Melissa Rutz won Showcase (their third NASDE win this year!), and Michael and LeAnn Norris won Carolina Classic (Carolina shag). Yours truly competed in Novice Jack-N-Jill prelims on Saturday in a field of about 35 couples, although I didn't make the final cut of 14 couples. I felt that I did well, even with most of the dancers from the southeastern U.S. I wish Dallas DANCE could limit entries, but then all hell would break loose.
Native Wichitans Jerry and Diane Owsley (Daytona Beach, FL) came as well as Stevie Blakely (Andover, KS) with Kris Swearingen (Overland Park, KS). Stevie and Kris competed in Strictly Swing with some of the best in the world, and did us very well. The only thing I don't like about the Grand Nationals is the end; it's over for this year. But now, summer is about to hit, and the NASDE circuit is taking a break until late July with Swingtime in the Rockies in Denver. Until then, here's the final results of the USA Grand Nationals:

2008 Oklahoma/Kansas State Swing Dance Championships
October 31 & November 1, 2008
Homebuilders Association (HBA) Building, Tulsa, OK

Mr. Kelly's Take: The 2008 state championships had a unique Halloween theme, but the dancing and music didn't scare anybody that came into the "HBA Arena" (my name for the facility) whatsoever. Wichita Dance Beat made its OKSSDA debut just nine months after it was formed, and did they ever bring it to the table!
Will Carlton and Stevie Blakely did their usual flair and helped the club out by winning Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary for the third straight year, and placing 2nd and 3rd in Pro-Am Contemporary with Ron Harvell (Stevie's partner) and Cathy Fieser (Will's partner). Yours truly (Kelly) competed four times in this convention (a career first), starting with Masters Strictly Swing (I'm 41 and partner Rena Young is 61) on Friday night, followed by Female Pro-Am Strictly Swing with Stevie, Novice SS with Rena (again), and swing teams with "The Dance Beat" on Saturday.
Rena and I were given 8th in both our contests (not bad, considering our first time competing together and the competition is better than four years ago), while Stevie and I were given 9th of 10 couples (a judge's scores were thrown out).
Jan Grewing returned to state competition by dancing Female Pro-Am SS with Joe Rohlin and Ron Harvell. Joe was 7th and Ron 8th in this tough field. She's still got the touch and moves to match; you go, Jan!
Other dancers competing for WDB included Ed and Shirley Parks, who were the only couple to compete in Novice Progressive, and therefore were given 1st. They performed an exhibition and were rewarded with a big hand at the finish. Also, Joe and Shelley Drassen did Novice Strictly Swing and finished 7th in their first strictly swing contest. Ron and Cathy, along with Joe Rohlin and Lori Robinson, competed in Novice Strictly Swing as well. Way to go, all of you!
The WDB swing team ("The Dance Beat") took the floor for the last time this year, and did their best performance as a team. A very appreciative and enthusiastic audience cheered the team on, and out of all that, they were given 2nd to a team from Swing Tulsa Style, which put on one of the most unique team performances I've ever seen. Enough said; see the video.
In the end, Swing Tulsa Style regained the club title from Oklahoma City Swing Club (2007 club champion), while Wichita Dance Beat finished 2nd; OKC was third, and the host Tulsa Swing Club was 4th. Thanks to all the dancers who made this contest a fun time for all; the 2009 state contest is scheduled (tentatively) for OKC next year and is to be hosted by Sooner Dance Club. DALLAS D.A.N.C.E. 2008
August 29-31, 2008
Fairmont Hotel, Dallas

Mr. Kelly's Take: The 22nd annual Dallas D.A.N.C.E. (named "Best Party In The Nation" by the late Kenny Wetzel) is in the books. Let me tell you, this is one event I'll never forget because I actually got to compete for a trophy in Dallas for the first time ever with the Wichita Dance Beat swing team.
WDB's team did the best performance of any Wichita swing team that has ever competed in Dallas and took 4th in a field that included three Dallas area teams that were coached by Robin McBride, Terry Rosebourough, and Lori Hayner. Great job to all of you!
We received lots of congrats and compliments from amateurs and professionals alike and that was enough to tell us that Wichita made a statement that not only is Wichita still alive, but is here to dance with the best of anybody else. Enough said.
Will Carlton and Stevie Young took home 4th in NASDE Showcase (won by Parker Dearborn and Jessica Cox for the 3rd straight year), Stevie took 3rd in Intermediate/Advanced Strictly Swing with Austin Murrey, and Will won Advanced Jack-N-Jill with Kat Carstenson, 2nd place in Intermediate/Advanced Strictly Swing with Chelsea Rodgers, and placed 6th with Mary Newman of Springfield, Missouri in Male Pro-Am.
Several other Wichita dancers competed in Novice Jack-N-Jill, Novice Strictly Swing, Masters Strictly Swing, and Cabaret: Ron Harvell, Ed and Shirley Parks, Rena Young, Cathy Fieser, Mary Ann Gust, Harry Reese, Amy Haney, and the River City X-Team. Ed and Shirley also competed in Novice Traditional and also did their best-ever performance in Dallas despite finishing 6th. Congratulations to all Wichita competitors--and like Gary Long always says, "they're all champions because they danced...and you didn't!"
Jordan Frisbee and Tatiana Mollmann won their 6th consecutive Classic in Dallas with a performance so incredible that I personally congratulated Jordan afterwards and told him I had never seen a fire in his eyes like I saw that night. INCREDIBLE! Just a word for Jordan and Tatiana--"Bring home the Open in Anaheim!"

2008 Southwest Regionals
DFW Airport Hyatt Regency
May 23-25, 2008--DFW International Airport, Irving, TX

updated September 15, 2008

Mr. Kelly's Take: Well, as it turned out, this was THE LAST Southwest Regional Dance Championships after a great 31-year run.
Many dancers who emerged from the Regionals became national champion dancers later in their careers. Dancers like Mario Robau, Jr., Gary Long, Steve and Michaele Giles, Terry Rosebourough, "Heavy" and "Snowflake" Grammer, Bobby Pritchard, Carmen Scarbourough Goodman, Robin (Uhrig) McBride, James Leyva, Kerry and Alisha Turner, Austin Murrey, and Will Carlton are forever linked to the Southwest Regionals as legends.
I competed in my second and final SWRDA Novice Jack-N-Jill and it happened to be a final with 13 couples. I was paired with Jessica Bernard of Dallas, and got 9th out of 13. Really, not bad for my first JNJ at a regional in six years.
In all the Progressive categories, there were a grand total of FOUR couples combined--sad but true. But the four couples got to dance their routines as exhibitions on Saturday night and did very well, especially Jeanne DeGeyter and Rafael Labrado, and Kelly Strouse and Alisha Turner.
I had to leave early Sunday morning to go back to Wichita so that I had to be at a dance team practice that night (silly on a holiday weekend, IMO), but I enjoyed being at the regional, and I was honored to be a part of the 31st and final Southwest Regionals.
To all dancers past, and present, thanks for your support of the SWRDA. The Regionals will be missed dearly, especially around Memorial Day Weekend 2009. Now for the record, here are the results of the FINAL Southwest Regionals ever held. Enjoy!

Tulsa Spring Swing 2008
May 29-June 1, 2008
Radisson Hotel Airport, Tulsa, OK

Mr. Kelly's Take: Personally, I wasn't there, but wanted to go. The final results came in today, and Ed Parks of Wichita Dance Beat e-mailed me to let me know about it. (thanks, Ed.) I'll focus this time on Wichita Dance Beat instructors Stevie Young and Will Carlton, who served notice that Wichita dancers are still on the "beat" (no pun intended); they and other attendees competed and social danced throughout the weekend with visitors from not only Tulsa, but OKC, Kansas City, St. Louis, Dallas, and Houston.
Plus, nothing like national champion dancers Parker Dearborn, Jessica Cox, Michael Kielbasa, and Jennifer DeLuca to headline the 2008 edition of TSS, then with the help of Jeanne DeGeyter, there was a "Jill and Jack" contest (where leaders and followers switch roles) which, from what I saw on TSS's webpage, is considered "priceless". You'll have to buy the DVD (for $40) to find out for yourself; otherwise, you can look at the pictures of the "Jill and Jack" on TSS's website.
Anyway, congrats to all the winnners and competitors who made this year's Tulsa Spring Swing one for the record books; here's how Will and Stevie did at TSS 2008:

Stevie Young: (partners in parentheses)
--Won 1st place in Advanced Jack-N-Jill (Oscar Hampton) and Female Pro-Am Intermediate Strictly Swing (Kyle Patel); also named Top Female Teacher!
--2nd place in Female Pro-Am Novice Jack-N-Jill (Jacob LeBleu), Female Pro-Am Intermediate Strictly Swing (Lonnie Johnson, Jr.), and "Jeanne's Jill-N-Jack" (J.B. Brodie)
--3rd place in Female Pro-Am Novice Strictly Swing (Mike Brenton)
--4th place in Advanced Strictly Swing (Oscar Hampton)
--5th place in Female Pro-Am Novice Strictly Swing (Erik Thompson)
--Other dancers: Hiroshi Yamada (Female Pro-Am Intermediate Strictly Swing--10th place), and Ed Parks (Female Pro-Am Novice Strictly Swing--11th place)

Will Carlton: (partners in parentheses)
--3rd place in Male Pro-Am Novice Jack-N-Jill (Katie Slater) and Advanced Strictly Swing (Chelsea Rodgers)
--4th place in Advanced Jack-N-Jill (Chelsea Rodgers) and Male Pro-Am Novice Strictly Swing (Amanda Thompson)
--6th place in Male Pro-Am Intermediate Strictly Swing (Cathy Fieser)

Special honorable mention to: Ed and Shirley Parks (alternates for Novice Strictly Swing finals!), and all other Wichita dancers, and other friends who helped make Tulsa Spring Swing 2008 one to remember--thanks a million! :) Kelly

2008 Tulsa City Swing Dance Championship
March 15, 2008

Kelly's Take: This year's TCSDC was very different in more ways than one: for one, Jeanne DeGeyter was NOT in town, for she was in Chicago for the Chicago Classic, and in fact, won one contest and placed in the top 10 in two other contests. Secondly, there was no Novice nor Intermediate category, and thirdly, there was a Jack-N-Jill contest in which I was invited and actually competed.
The Newcomer and Pro-Am divisions only had one couple in each category, but the Newcomer/Non-Newcomer and Strictly Swing categories had six and five couples, respectively.
By the way, I drew Tulsa's own Janet Rials in the Jack-N-Jill contest. There were four heats and 17 total couples in the contest. The best couple from each heat got in the finals, and the field turned out to be stacked against me and Janet. Anyway, I enjoyed the competition and hope to win my first JNJ someday. Here are the final results of the contest--enjoy!

2007 Oklahoma/Kansas State Swing Dance Championships
November 2-3, 2007, Meridian Convention Center, OKC

Mr. Kelly's Take: Oklahoma City is rejoicing that the OKC Swing Dance Club won the OKSSDA club trophy after Swing Tulsa Style had won it nine consecutive years, which, just by sheer coincidence, happened to be every year that I have gone to the state contest, starting in Tulsa back in 1998.
OKC Swing Club can also thank Swing Wichita Dance Club and friends for helping them win their second-ever team trophy (their first came way back in 1990!); meanwhile, Swing Wichita was led by Will Carlton and Stevie Young, plus their friends, including Kyle Patel, Oscar Hampton, Shannon Albert (STS), and Chelsea Rodgers (OKC). Stevie won three contests (one of which was a tie in Pro-Am Routine), and took second in another. Will won one contest and placed second in three others, and co-founder Jan Grewing won Female Pro-Am Strictly Swing with Kyle.
OKC won or shared five first-place wins this time, including a 1-2-3 finish in Newcomer Strictly Swing. It also won or shared all three Jack-N-Jill contests on Friday night. Their winners included Erik and Amanda Thompson, James and Treva Royall, Brock Geeslin and Shirley Moore, Chelsea Rodgers, and Allen and Mickey O'Dell. Among the two other Wichita dance clubs, River City Swing was represented by these dancers: Harry Reese, Cathy Fieser, Ed and Shirley Parks, Amy Haney, Ron Harvell, Rena Young, Joe Rohlin, George Bachman, Vanessa Zimmerman, and the River City Swing X-Team. Ed placed 2nd in Female Pro-Am with Stevie Young, while Ed and Shirley, along with Ron and Cathy, competed in Novice Progressive.
Wichita Push Club was represented competition-wise by Mary Ann Gust; she won 2nd in Masters with Harry Reese and danced with Tom Cameron in Intermediate/Advanced Strictly Swing. The club had six members as judges: Kelly Eslinger, Harry and Mary Ann Gust, Gail Webb, and Joe and Shelley Drassen.

DALLAS D.A.N.C.E. 2007
August 31-September 2, 2007
Fairmont Hotel, Dallas

Mr. Kelly's Take: Live from rehab (my apartment--HA!), this was the most enjoyable convention in a long time--my 10th straight year in Dallas DANCE! I even competed in my fourth Dallas DANCE Novice Jack-N-Jill (2001, 2003, and 2005 previously) and it was my best of the four ever. But it was not enough to make the semifinal cut of 22 couples. Anyway, Wichita's own Will Carlton and Stevie Young won the Intermediate/Advanced Strictly Swing, while Austin Murrey won 5th in the same category; Ed and Shirley Parks competed in Novice Traditional and finished 8th; and River City Swing's team finished 3rd in Swing Teams.
One of the best parts for me was seeing my favorite female dancer Katie Berardino; I had first met her in 1998 (my first Dallas DANCE) and I hadn't seen her in three years. Believe me, just seeing her smile at me and kiss me just gives me goose bumps.
There were several repeat winners from last year, including Jordan Frisbee and Tatiana Mollmann, Parker Dearborn and Jessica Cox, and Chips Hough and Janice Salmon. Just four months after their three-and-a-half year NASDE winning streak ended in Atlanta, Jordan and Tatiana rebounded to win their 5th consecutive Classic title, while both Parker/Jessica and Chips/Janice won their second straight titles in Showcase and Masters, respectively.
Also, it was announced by MC Gary Long that Gary Kuhn would step down as tally room coordinator after doing his rightful duty every year for 21 straight years--amazing! Gary Kuhn was the one who put in relative placement scoring in West Coast Swing, and the entire community is better off because of his immense contribution. With apologies to Fox Sports Net, Gary Kuhn is "The Best Damn Tally Room Man...Period!" End of story; now here are the final results of Dallas D.A.N.C.E. 2007--enjoy!

2007 USA Grand Nationals
May 24-28, 2007
Renaissance Waverly Hotel, Atlanta, GA

Mr. Kelly's Take: Other than problems with attitudes of "every man for himself" on Greyhound buses, and being accosted out of $30 at the Atlanta Greyhound bus station at 4:30 a.m. Eastern, my first trip to the USA Grand Nationals was one to remember. I want to come back next year, period.
The big story in Atlanta was the end of "THE STREAK"--Jordan Frisbee and Tatiana Mollmann's incredible winning streak of 33 straight NASDE contests, starting in January 2004 in San Diego and including four consecutive Dallas D.A.N.C.E. titles and three consecutive U.S. Open Classic titles. Who ended "THE STREAK"? It was none other than local favorite Michael Norris and his partner, Kellese Key. Their dance and song easily drew the biggest cheers of the entire weekend, and got even louder on Sunday night when Michael and Kellese were announced as the winners--and Cher Peadon sobbed tears of joy.
I had the honor of meeting for the first time Robert and Nicola Royston, Sam West, Ronnie DeBenedetta, Brandi Tobias, Michael Kielbasa, Jennifer DeLuca, and Michael and LeAnn Norris. Also, former Wichitan Jerry Owsley was in attendance that weekend, along with Debbie Ramsey-Boz, whom I had not seen in eight years; I had last seen her at (then) Texas Classic 1999 in Dallas. All I can say is: WHAT A WEEKEND! I'll be back next year if I can! Here are the final results of USA Grand Nationals 2007 (top six in each category except Junior Shag I and II and Cabaret get trophies):

2006 OKSSDA State Championships
November 10-11, 2006
Crowne Plaza Hotel, Tulsa

Mr. Kelly's Take: What can I say? Another OKSSDA convention in the books, and one of the most fun times I've ever had in Tulsa, or anywhere, for any swing dance contest (other than the hotel's restaurant, but that's a different story); especially since the theme was "Honoring the Kings and Queens of Swing", and many of them were in the house, including Andrea Scott, who was my first Pro-Am Strictly Swing partner in 2004. Does the tune "Slow Boat to China" come to mind? Anyway, Andrea had taken over a year off to re-energize, and after that time, she still has the touch, believe me.
The "Kings and Queens of Swing" who were in attendance received a special award in appreciation of their contributions to swing in Oklahoma and Kansas. Mark Harris introduced all of them, even those who weren't able to be at the convention, and afterwards, had the audience stand and give the dancers a much-deserved standing ovation.
Those "Kings and Queens of Swing" in attendance were: Will Carlton, Jeanne DeGeyter, Glenda Evans, Barry Jones, Austin Murrey, Harry Reese, Judy Rooms, Andrea Scott, and John Thomas. Others honored but not present were: Jody Bridges (deceased), Jerry Crim (deceased), Judy Ford LaFemina, Chips Hough, Barbara Little, Gary Long, Doug Morris, Star Morris, Al Neel, and Terry Rosebourough. Congrats to all the Kings and Queens for raising the bar for all of us! Now back to the convention:
Barry Jones and Austin Murrey shared emcee duties and did the best job of emceeing a state contest that I can remember. The energy from the audience was at an all-time high, especially with dancers from the Oklahoma City Swing Club, the 2007 host club. OKC finished 2nd in the team trophy race, with their supporters often making the loudest cheers in the entire audience--because their dancers won or shared four first place wins.
Swing Wichita Dance Club made a statement in its first contest as an OKSSDA member club. SWDC members scored FIVE first place wins, with Will Carlton scoring three of them in his return to OKSSDA competition, one of which was with his mother, Jan Grewing. Will and Jan started SWDC in August of 2005, and already the club has made quite an impact. SWDC may have finished third in the team trophy race, but don't be surprised if it wins a team trophy in the not-too-distant future.
Brian Low won Newcomer/Novice Strictly Swing for SWDC, teaming with OKC's Bonnie Cannon. Meanwhile, Mark and Mary Harris did quite well in their return to state competition, with Mark and partner Glenda Evans winning Masters, and Mary teaming with Brian Low for a 4th place finish in Pro-Am Strictly Swing.
Terry and Colleen Cummings competed for River City Swing in their first WCS convention and had great results--Terry won Intermediate/Advanced Jack-N-Jill with Tulsa's Enola O'Connor, followed by Terry and Colleen placing 2nd in Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary. Not too bad for their first swing dance convention!
And believe it or not, yours truly, Kelly Eslinger, won something--a one-hour private lesson with none other than... Will Carlton! That was one of many door prizes given away this weekend, along with a ton of great memories that attendees will take with them from the 2006 OKSSDA state contest.
Oh, before I forget, Swing Tulsa Style won its 9th consecutive team trophy--the beat goes on for STS. Now, its on to the rest of the year and preparing for the 2007 OKSSDA State Championships in Oklahoma City. May I say to all dancers and competitors..."CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE ALL WINNERS!"

Tulsa Fall Fling
October 13-15, 2006
Crowne Plaza Hotel, Tulsa, OK

Kelly's take: I went down only on Saturday night for the dance, but it was a lot better attended than I first thought. Thanks to national champion dancers Parker Dearborn, Jessica Cox, Austin Murrey, Jeanne DeGeyter (host), and Barry Jones, the Fall Fling was a rousing success in its first year.
There were no Advanced contests at all, so only Novice and Intermediate dancers signed up, competed, and won. Simply put, it was the "Henry and Lonnie Show"; Henry Pulido (St. Louis) and Lonnie Johnson, Jr. (Oklahoma City) won both Jack-N-Jill and Strictly Swing contests in their levels (Lonnie in Novice, and Henry in Intermediate).
Dancers came from not only Tulsa and Wichita (myself, Joe and Shelley Drassen, Noel Phipps, and Mary Waters), but Kansas City, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Houston, and St. Louis. Over half of those attendees participating in workshops were from outside Tulsa--sounds very promising for a second "Fall Fling" next October.
The Crowne Plaza was outstanding in hosting this event; in fact, it will host THREE more swing dance events before next June--the 2006 Oklahoma/Kansas State Swing Dance Championships, the 2007 Tulsa Spring Swing, and the 2007 Southwest Regionals on Memorial Day Weekend. Check it out whenever you're in Tulsa!

DALLAS D.A.N.C.E. 2006
September 1-3, 2006
Fairmont Hotel, Dallas

Kelly's take: It was the 20th annual event for not only my all-time favorite swing dance convention, but one of the top dance conventions in the world. This event was first done on Labor Day Weekend 1987 at the Harvey Hotel in suburban Irving, Texas (home of the Dallas Cowboys!), and in 1990, moved to its current location in downtown Dallas.
This year's convention easily outdrew last year's event, which was overshadowed by Hurricane Katrina. Most of the events started late, but in general, all of them were real good, especially Showcase, Classic, and even the Advanced Jack-N-Jill, where Xavier Young shocked and wowed the Sunday afternoon audience with a break hit doing the splits, unsupported! That drew the strongest and wildest audience reaction of the entire weekend--by the way, he and partner Annmarie LaFramboise won.
Roxanne Ware, Terry Rosebourough, and Deborah Szekely were inducted into the Dallas DANCE Hall of Fame; Robert Cordoba and Deborah Szekely were guest MCs for Classic, Barry Jones and Kellese Key were guest MCs for Showcase, and national blues recording artist Hamilton Loomis performed LIVE music late Sunday night to help the convention celebrate 20 years of championship dancing in Dallas! 2006 Southwest Regionals
May 26-28, 2006
Melody Club Ballroom, Houston

These results are from swwc.org (posted on May 30, 2006; full results to be posted ASAP)

Kelly's take: While yours truly wished he could be outside of Wichita, either in Atlanta or Houston, some of the finest dancers in the Southwest took part in the first SW Regionals held in Houston since 1985. From what I saw on the swwc.org website, I can only speculate that it was a lot of fun in Houston. Even though no dancer from Kansas won, our friends in Tulsa did themselves proud.
Swing Tulsa Style finished tied for 2nd in the team trophy race, led by Jeanne DeGeyter with FOUR wins, two thirds, and a fourth--WOW! Don Law and Enola O'Connor won Novice Progressive, while former Tulsa and Wichita resident Terry Rosebourough sparkled with a 1st, 3rd, and a 4th.

Full results are now available at Texas Classic website. Enjoy!
