2002 OKSSDA State Championships

Over 200 dancers from Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita, and Kansas City attended the 2002 Oklahoma/Kansas State Swing Dance Championships at the Westin Hotel in Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma City Swing Club hosted a great event, with red, white, and blue balloons, ribbons, and American flags decorating the makeshift ballroom in the mall downstairs at the hotel. Most of the attendees were from the Oklahoma City Swing Club, who showed their support for these championships with great pride.

Thirty-eight (38) couples performed and entertained the audience in ten categories. Highlights included Cow Town Swing Dance Club's impressive debut, finishing 1/2 of a point behind Swing Tulsa Style in their first-ever state competition; Austin Murrey of Oz Swing Club completing a hat trick by winning the last three contests of the weekend; Will Carlton and Charolett Knapic winning Novice Strictly Swing as the only couple from the Wichita Push Club in the entire state competition; and OKC Swing Club winning three contests as well.

However, there was a dark side in this contest. The Novice Traditional contest had a controversial finish, as a protest was filed by the judges after the contest. The protest was filed over at least two couples thought to be performing contemporary content during their "traditional" routines. Two couples were DQ'd, dropping them out of contention; one was from Cow Town, and the other was from River City Swing. One of the two couples would have finished second in the contest.

In spite of that controversy, all the dance clubs and competitors are to be congratulated for winning and competing in the 20th annual state championships.
