2003 OKSSDA State Championships Final Results

The 2003 Oklahoma/Kansas State Swing Dance Championships will go down as one of the all-time best conventions in OKSSDA history, if not the best. The convention drew over 300 people, many of them from Wichita, on Saturday, November 8th, making the 2003 contest the HIGHEST-ATTENDED event in the 21-year history of the OKSSDA.

River City Swing Club did a tremendous job hosting the event, which included Steve Giles as emcee, and Ronnie "The Dance Man" Choy as DJ. And to top it off, a midnight breakfast buffet was served after the awards, then there was social dancing until 4:15 a.m. Sunday morning! And you thought that Dallas D.A.N.C.E. had some serious late night social dancing!

Fifty-one (51) couples competed in the contest in 10 different categories. Novice Strictly Swing was the big winner as far as entries were concerned; an OKSSDA-record 13 couples competed in that contest, which was only in its third year. In the other two Strictly Swing events, Advanced Strictly Swing had 9 couples, while Mixed Pro-Am Strictly Swing had 7 couples. Strictly Swing is becoming the "in" category in the country as far as West Coast Swing events go. Strictly Swing means that you can choose your dance partner, but you can't choose your music; it's pure on-the-spot choreography.

Highlights of the contest included Joe and Shelley Drassen (WPC) winning Newcomer, Will Carlton (WPC) winning three contests and finishing second in three others (one amazing feat!), Austin Murrey (OZ) winning two contests and placing second in another contest, and also two ladies from Wichita Push Club making triumphant returns to the winner's circle after a four-year absence: Jan Owsley and Mary Ann Gust.

Also, there was a first-place tie in Novice Strictly Swing (believed to be an OKSSDA first) with Andrew Khouw and Betty Langston as well as Stan Bennett and Dee Murrey sharing top honors.

But when all was said and done, Swing Tulsa Style won their sixth consecutive OKSSDA club trophy (a new record!) and eighth overall. STS had a whopping 55 points! Meanwhile, the Wichita Push Club finished second with 22 points, and the host River City Swing Club had 21 points. WPC had their best finish since 1998, when their five-year run ended in Tulsa and STS started their ongoing dynasty.

Congratulations and thanks to all the dancers who competed in Jack-N-Jills and the other 10 regular categories, even those who did not place in the top four. You made this contest very special, and most importantly, YOU ARE ALL WINNERS!
