The In-Lieu-of-Suspension Program is offered to create a supervised out of school suspension opportunity, where a student can use this time to give service to the community.
The goals of the In-Lieu-of-Suspension Program are to increase the participating student's self esteem and improve his/her social skills by placing the student in an enhancing role within the local community. The student's consequent increase in self esteem will, in time, lower his/her incidence of out-of-school suspension and other disciplinary actions and thereby increase the student's academic performance.
West Middle School (WMS) has mentoring opportunities available for students under the In-Lieu-Of Program. Service agencies and local elementary schools located throughout the Leavenworth community have agreed to mentor eighth grade WMS students. Students participating in the mentoring program work at designated schools or agencies in accordance with the schedule below*. In most cases, the mentoring program coincides with exploratory classes so students will not miss core classes. Exploratory class teachers have agreed to excuse students enrolled in the mentoring program from their classes and will allow them time to make up any missed assignments.
