Some of you may remember a popular rock band that was very popular around 1994, but seemed to drop off the face of the earth after their triple-platinum, self-titled debut album. Of course, I am referring to the best band since Oingo-Boingo...Weezer.
Weezer has released two albums since its inception in 1992- "Weezer," and a much less popular (although I really don't understand why) follow-up "Pinkerton" on the David Geffen label.
"Pinkerton" is the best sophomore release since Def Leppard's "Pyromania". "Pinkerton" is a fairly short album, with only 10 songs, but is worth every single penny you spend.
There is not a bad song on "Pinkerton." However, do not expect to hear the same Weezer this time as you heard on Weezer's first release, as Pinkerton has a much rawer and harder sound. Guitarists Brian Bell and Rivers Cuomo unleash their distorted, screaming guitars all over the album, with good solos and riffs. Great bass rips through with the other guitars, and pulsating drums by Pat Sharp.
But that's not the only good part of the album. The song's on "Pinkerton" actually have MEANING. Each song is based on some relationship gone bad in the life of songwriter Rivers Cuomo.
In track 8, "Pink Triangle", Cuomo sings about a serious relationship he had that blew up in his face when he found out the girl he was chasing was not exactly interested in men...
"...Everyone's a little queer, why can't she be a little straight?"
Every song on "Pinkerton" rocks. The best song on album is definately #6, "The Good Life".
"The Good Life is about returning to the good old days of "Shakin' Bootie",and "Makin' sweet love all the night."
In usual weezer fashion, every song builds up throughout, then climaxes with a guitar solo and a screaming solo. It is weezer's basic formula for every song, but it never gets tired.
The only downside to "Pinkerton" is that it is only 34 minutes and 30 seconds long. Other than that, "Pinkerton" totally rocks, and there is no reason that you shouldn't buy it.
I give "Pinkerton" and A+ because it is an excellent album, plain and simple. I recommend it to anyone and everyone because it can be enjoyed be anyone and everyone. The only thing is that this is one of those records that you have to listen to a few times to really get into it, but once you do, you won't be sorry.
Buy it now.
