Life on a Klingon Ship

Life aboard a Klingon ship A Klingon ship is a warship. There are no sizable recreational facilities, no extra space, few research facilities, little privacy and no family except perhaps those of one's extended line. The day is divided roughly in half. For one half, the crewman is on duty at his assigned station. The other half might be considered "off duty" and is also divided in half. Half is for training, personal equipment maintenance and eating while the other half is sleep. The modern Klingon ship has enough for room each crewman to have his own personal space and bunk. To compare it to what you might be used to seeing on Star Trek; Federation crewmen are granted 110 square meters of deck space as personal space, Klingon crewmen have around 8 square meters. Only the command staff have private rooms, all others must share space. All Klingon vessels are rated for the carrying of assault troops for invasions, fleet boarding actions and other missions. This can triple the number of Klingons aboard a ship. In these circumstances, the normal naval personnel will usually double or triple up in barracks rather than sharing their spaces with the transient troops. In this case, the crew will "hot bunk", the bed available to one crewman while the other is on duty. When one comes off duty, he gets the bunk while the other goes on duty. Crews are generally permitted to "negotiate" their own sleeping arrangements and bunk mates. Since Klingons carry very few personal possessions with them aboard ship, being moved out of their small personal space is a matter of a few minutes with the assistance of perhaps one other. While females are a minority aboard Klingon ships they are afforded no special privileges or privacy. Klingon ships do not employ replicators or even food processing machinery as much as Federation vessels. Thus, the job of being the cook is much more important. Klingons also eat a great deal at one sitting and demand food that is fresh. When a Klingon ship sets out of port, every available space is stuffed with food. Under bunks, in lockers even under deck plates. Larger ships have pens for live animals and even smaller ships may have a targh or two. Blood worms are kept by the cook on Klingon vessels of every size. So there you have it, life on your average Klingon warship, from the largest Negh'var attack cruiser, right down to the smallest attack shuttles.
