OPERATING ON DANGEROUS DOGS

"The eyes are still blinking by itself, as if the dog is getting up!" Nurse Ann warned. In deep general anaesthesia, the dog's sclera or eye white is seen but not the cornea and iris. This is because the eyeball rotates downwards or vertically. When you touch the eye lashes with your fingers, the eyes do not blink.

Now, these eyelids blink automatically. A higher dose of the halothane gas managed to subdue the dog intermittently during surgery for 15 minutes. When the gas was reduced to the normal 2%, the blinking commenced again, causing Nurse Ann to sweat.

It was like operating on a wolf or tiger. They bite suddenly even when tranquilised. This was an unusual anaesthetic case. Dogs don't blink automatically during deep anaesthesia. This dog seemed to know what was going on. 2 big swollen ovaries of around 3/4-inch in diameter and 2 womb tubes of 3/4-inch diameter and 8 inches long, fragile and full of thick sticky pus were removed.

Dr Chua had his ankle snapped by a Rottweiler who was displeased with being vaccinated. It was not muzzled and it was a big-headed big jawed type. Once bitten, twice shy?

"Last 2 stitches!" The operating table was shaking as the big dog started to move. "Cut the four strings holding the dog down".

The Rottweiler just got up from the operating table. "Where is the muzzle?" Panic was evident as Nurse Ann was worried about being bitten. There was a continuous episode of bleeding from the stitched area. The tongue was pale in colour. Would the dog die? Should it be operated at all?

The operation was necessary as there was extensive bacterial infection of the birth tubes and antibiotics would resolve the problem for the short term before the vaginal purulent discharge would recur.

The bleeding from the surgical site stopped after a while. The dog went home and lived to a ripe old age.

Pyometra was the diagnosis.  It meant that the uterine tubes were infected with   bacteria, leading to a yellowish sticky vaginal discharge.  Had the bitch been spayed, there would be no pyometra.  But not all unspayed bitches suffer from pyometra.  The owner just had to be alert to any abnormal discharges in bitches especially, after 5 years of age.

Photo 1:  At home, 20 days before surgery. The complaint was that the 9-year old Rottweiler bitch was not eating for a few days. Emaciated with spinal bones seen. It was given antibiotics for 10 days and the  appetite returned. It needed to gain weight and health before anaesthesia and surgery to minimize risks of death during or after surgery.

Photo 2: Tranquilised and prepared for surgery - sticky crescent of mucus from the vaginal discharge seen on right hock too.

Photo 3: At home, 7 days after surgery, ready to pounce on the vet despite sprained right hind limb. Has put on weight.

Diagnosis: Open pyometra - a bacterial infection of the womb in older female dogs & and right hind sprained muscles. The cause could be the sudden jumping at every dog passing by, slippery wet tiled floor, loud midnight thunder 2 days ago.
