If you talk to the animals
they will talk to you,
and then you will know each other.
If you do not talk to them,
you will not know them.
And what you do not know,
you will fear.
What one fears one destroys.
-By: Chief Dan George..

Wolfs are one if not the most misunderstood of all the wild animals.
There has never been any confirmed attack and killing of a human by a healthy wolf.
Wolves are the exact opposite of what they have been
stereotyped as. They are social and very intelligent. Their sense of family is strong
and loyal and they live by carefully defined
rules and rituals.
Many believe that the true test of America's sincerity about protecting the
environment will be whether or not the wolf remains protected and is permitted to be
put into areas of the country where it had been previously eliminated.
The wolf is the spirit of the free and unspoiled wilderness.

There are different speicies of wolves: The red wolf is the smallest and it may be extinct in the wild,
there are efforts to reintroduce it. Its home was in the southern USA.
The Mexican Wolf is in some ways like the common known Gray Wolf. It is found in the
southwest US and in Mexico. It was hunted to almost extinction, and is now a part
of a recovery and captive breeding plan.
The Arctic wolf is most likely the purest breed. Its home being in the Arctic circle has most surely been the reason of its survival.

The Gray or the Timber wolf is the most common breed of wolf. Today it is only found
in Alaska, Canada, and the region around the Great Lakes.
The Gray Wolf is not always or only gray, it can be black, gray, brown, white or a lot of color combinations.

Another misunderstanding about wolves is it's size, they are not as big as most people think they are.
The thickness and appearance of their fur makes them look larger than what they are.
Wolves are usually no taller than a good sized German Shepherd.

Wolves do not fight if they don't have to. They will most often go out of their way
to avoid it.Though they are extremely powerful and strong, disagreements
rarely end in fights. Usually a glance, posture,a growl is all that is necessary to make their point.

Wolves howl, whimper, growl, and even bark. Their howls have different meanings
The howl may be used to call others of the pack or to locate other members.
Howls may be a social expression. They are used to greet one another and to make known certain territories.
They will even howl for the joy of it.
To wrap this up, wolves are a beautiful and most interesting animal and should not be feared
or destroyed because of the lack of understanding them. Wolves and humans can live together on this earth
and if we listen or watch long enough they
may teach us something about ourselves and ways of survival and most important the beauty of untouched nature.
