Quail Run Library Book Reviews

Quail Run is an elementary school in Lawrence, Kansas. Students in grades four, five, and six have been invited to submit reviews of their favorite books. New Reviews will be posted each week. Reviews from past weeks can be found in the Archives. If you have any recommendations for our students to read and review, please e-mail us.

Title: POPPY AND RYE ----- Author: Avi

Poppy the mouse is trying to return her boy friend's earing and tell his family that he died. She runs into lots of trouble. When she gets there, she finds out that the beavers are making them move. She makes a plan. Will it work or will the beavers take over the pond?

Poppy takes place in a forest called Dimwood Forest. Poppy's boy friend, Ragweed, got killed by Mr. Ocax, the owl. Mr. Ocax forces Poppy's family to move to a new home. Poppy goes out in search of a new place where her family can live. Poppy comes across some adventures. Poppy is very brave and faces her fears.

Title: PERLOO THE BOLD ----- Author: Avi

Avi is one of my favorite authors, and I really enjoyed his recent book PERLOO THE BOLD. Perloo must prevent a war between the montmers and the Felbarts that the pretend grahter Berwig and his first assistant Senyous are plotting. However, Perloo is a quiet, scholarly Montmer who lives in his burrow surrounded by books. Can he succeed? Read and find out!

Title: SUN AND SPOON ----- Author: Kevin Henkes

Rating: 7 ----- Category: Realistic Fiction

Spoon, a ten year lod boy, is dealing with his grandmother's recent death and his grandfather's deep sadness. Spoon is anxious to find something special to remind him of his grandmother. What he discovers makes an intriguing conclusion to the book. This book is being considered for the William Allen White Award.

Title: NERO CORLEONE: A CAT'S STORY ----- Author: Elke Heidenriud

Rating: 10 ----- Category: Adventure

This book is exciting and sad, but I enjoyed it. It is about the life cycle of an Italian cat.I recommend this book highly.
