Shiloh & Corinth 2011


An updated look at the schedule for that 3rd weekend of June!

Thursday, June 16th

8 AM - Arrive at Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center. View Shiloh film and explore first two exhibit rooms. Visiting Corinth prior to Shiloh is mandatory. This is why The Visitor's Center was built in Corinth. The first exhibit room deals with the events leading up to the war on a national level. A step across the railroad tracks and the next exhibit explains the importance of Corinth and the early days of the war in Mississippi. We will then enter the box-car piled high with war supplies. At the far end of the car is an electronic map which detail troop movements prior to the battle of Shiloh. In the second room, the Shiloh Room, there are exhibits about the two armies and some of the individuals involved. The 12 minute video "Shiloh: Shattered Peace" begins in the small circular theatre every 15 minutes. In addition there are exhibits discussing the care of the wounded in Corinth and the May 1862, siege of the city.

9 AM - Depart CCWIC.

9:30 AM - Arrive at Johnson Bivouac site. Discuss Johnston's last night and the meeting with his subordinates and the final decision to go ahead with the attack.

10:00 AM - Arrive at Shiloh NMP. Stop at southern park entrance and visit Fraley/Woods fields. Discuss the opening phase of the battle at the site where the Confederate troops under Hardcastle fought with the union patrol under Powell.

10:30 AM - Arrive at Pittsburg Landing. Discuss the reasons why the Federal army was at Pittsburg Landing and the position of the Union army on the morning of the 6th.

11:15 AM - Arrive at Rhea Field. Talk about the Confederate attack on the Union right. Cleburne's attack. The 6th Mississippi and the 53rd Ohio. Sherman's close call.

12:00 NOON - Lunch at picnic area.

1:00 PM - Arrive at Hornet's Nest. Discuss fighting in the center of the line. Walk to Peach Orchard and Bloody Pond. Walk to Prentiss surrender site and Confederate monument.

3:30 PM - Arrive at Shiloh Indian Mounds National Historic Landmark. Discuss Forrest's late night recon of Federal lines.

4:00 PM - Stop at mouth of Dill Branch. Discuss the final Confederate attack and the use of gunboats during the battle.

4:30 PM - Grant's Last Line. Discuss Grant's final stand on the 6th and the arrival of the Army of the Ohio.

5:00 PM - Return to Corinth.

Evening Option, tentatively 7 PM – visit the Duncan House, home of our tour guide, Tom Parsons, for drinks and an evening walking tour of the historic district. The home was HQ for General Beauregard prior to Shiloh, to General Breckenridge during the siege of Corinth, and to General Rosecrans at the time of the Battle of Corinth.

Friday, June 17th

8:00 AM - Meet at Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center. Continue tour of the Visitor Center. Commence at Earthwork exhibit and cross into the Corinth Room. Exhibits on occupation of the city, the Battle of Corinth and the story of the Corinth Contraband Camp. The 11 minute video" Decision at the Crossroads" begins every 15 minutes.

9:00 AM - The Stream of American History. Discuss the Center's courtyard water feature.

9:15 AM - Free time for book store or research library.

9:45 AM - Arrive at Battery F. Discuss the fighting on October 3rd.

10:30 AM - Arrive at Beauregard Line earthworks. Discuss earthworks and their use during the siege and battle. Includes a 15 minute walk each way along a dirt path. Exceptional earthworks.

12:00 NOON - Arrive at Battery Robinett. Discuss the fighting on October 4th.

At a yet to be determined time we will have Lunch (box lunches) in the courtyard of the Civil War Interpretive Center. This isn't likely to be a leisurely lunch!

? PM - Arrive at Depot/Trailhead Park. Visit the railroad crossing and discuss the Confederate "high water mark" of the battle .Option to visit the museum but there is only one Civil War exhibit inside. The museum concentrates on railroading, aviation pioneering and Coca-Cola memorabilia.

The plan is to finish no later than 2:30 PM so that those wishing to do so can return to hotel with adequate time for WEDDING preparation. Those attending the wedding will have dinner with the newlyweds at the restaurant of the Pickwick St. Park.

At whatever time best suits your desired arrival...head to Shiloh United Methodist Church (old church) for the wedding of the Bookends! The wedding will take place at 5:30 PM. For those not wishing to attend, the rest of the day could be spent at Iuka, Tupelo or Brice's Crossroads. Other options further away include Parker's Crossroads, Britton Lane and Holly Springs

Saturday, June 18th

8:00 AM - Depart HQ.

8:45 AM - Arrive at Shiloh NMP main entrance. Discuss the status and position of each army on the morning of April 7th.

9:15 AM - Arrive in Jones Field. Discuss the early attack by the Union right under Lew Wallace.

9:30 AM - Arrive at Wolff Field. Discuss the Confederate counter-attack. Walk to Confederate Burial trench and discuss the internment of the Southern dead.

10:30 AM - Arrive at Ruggles Line. The action here was on April 6th but the collection of artillery pieces is not to be missed.

11:30 AM - Lunch at Hagy's Catfish Hotel.

12:30 PM - Free time in bookstore and Visitor Center.

2:00 PM - Meet at gates of National Cemetery. Tour the grounds.

3:15 PM - Arrive at Fallen Timbers. Discuss action at this site on April 8th and the wounding of Col. Forrest.

After tour concludes, head back to Corinth to freshen up for evening festivities.

5:30 PM - Book Exchange begins.

6:30 PM - Mustering Out Dinner on site at HQ.

Conclude evening's activity by 10:00 PM.

Sunday, June 20th (optional) This would not be an official part of muster. If there is sufficient interest, a guide or guides would share further information and insights while touring the additional areas of interest.

9:00 AM - Depart CCWIC. Stops at Chewalla site of Van Dorn's camp site and Young's Bridge on the Tuscumbia River, scene of the final engagement of the Corinth campaign.

10:30 AM - Arrive at Metamora Ridge. Discuss the opening phases of the engagement at Davis Bridge on the Hatchie River.

11:30 AM - Arrive at the site of Davis Bridge. Conclude the talk along the banks of the Hatchie.

1:00 PM - Arrive back in Corinth.

Other Sunday options "on your own" could include:

To the south: a visit to the Brice's Crossroads Museum and battlefield in Baldwyn and the Tupelo Battlefield site, or what's left of it, at Tupelo. The driving time to Baldwyn is 45 minutes and an additional 15 minutes to Tupelo.

To the north: Parker's Crossroads battle site off Interstate 40 (70 miles or 1 ½ hours) or the Britton Lane Battlefield just south of Jackson (65 miles).

To the west: Holly Springs, Mississippi (60 miles). Use the latest issue of Blue & Gray Magazine and use the "General's Tour."

These five major fields are all within an hour and a half of Corinth.
