Mile High Stadium...Home of the Denver Broncos
Things to Know About Mile High Stadium
- First of all, it is located in Denver, Colorado
- It is home to the Denver Broncos.
- On November 3, 1998 voters approved a new stadium to be buildt with an increase in sales tax. Contrustion began on the new stadium (in the current Mile High Parking lot) on August 17, 1999. Needless to say, parking for games is currently a mess!!!
- Mile High Stadium has been called the loudest stadium in the United States.
- It is also home to the Colorado Rapids, a Major League Soccer team.
- The stadium used to share a parking lot with McNichols arena, home of the Denver Nuggets and the Avalanche. But, after the Pepsi Center was built, those teams moved and McNichols was imploded to make room for the new Mile High Stadium.
- The South stands are basically bleachers and the rowdiest seats to sit in. There is suppose to be an area similar to the South Stands in the new stadium too.
- The new stadium will provide close to the same amount of seats, but will almost be double in square footage of the current stadium.
- Mile High Stadium was built in 1948 and was called Bears Stadium. It was originally built as a baseball stadium.
- It was not renamed Mile High Stadium until 1968.
- The Denver Broncos played their first game there in 1960.
- The new stadium is expected to be operating by the 2001 season...so you had better get to a game this year so you can say good-bye to a legend!!!
I just love Mile High Stadium. I think it is a great place to visit, especially to
see a Broncos game. It still has a slightly nostalgic look and feel about it.
And, the energy that stadium posseses on a Sunday is unlike anywhere else.
My husband and I visited Mile High and paid our homage the year before last to see the
Broncos beat up on the Eagles. Below is a picture of me in front
of Mile High Stadium.
Did you know that Mile High stadium was buildt in 1948? Since then, many renovations
and improvements have been made. Originally, though, only the lower level west
and the North stands existed. But, in 1963 the South Stands were built to
accomodate the American Football Leage. Today, the South Stands are usually
the cheapest tickets you can get. They are basically bleachers formatted seats.
But, it is probably one of the most exciting places to sit at the stadium.
In 1968 the west upper deck seats were added and in 1976 the upper deck north was
added. It was not until 1977 that the east stands were added. Did you know that
the east stands are movable? When the Rockies played baseball at Mile High from
1993-1994, they had to move the east stands to make the field large enough
for professional baseball. Anyway, with all of these renovations, the grand total
capacity for Mile High Stadium today is 76,123. That is a lot of screaming
Broncos fans for any visiting team to handle. And, by the way, all Broncos games
have been sold out for years. But, you can usually find ticket for an extra
charge at some ticket agencies. Here is a picture of the east stands and the
field.
Oh, and one more addition I forgot to tell you about...the horse on top of the
scoreboard is called Buck the Bronco. He has been resting atop the scoreboard,
which is located above the South Stands, since 1976. Buck is made out of white
fiberglass and is 30 feet tall. Here is a picture of Buck and the scoreboard.
After all of these years and memories that Mile High Stadium has given us, it will
soon be time to say good bye. Contruction is over 50 percent complete on the new stadium. Mile High currently has plumbing problems and lacks adequate restrooms (I can agree
on that). Plus, it is fairly non modern and does not meet the standards set forth by the American with Disabilities Act. So, one day soon, a new Buck will be greeting
us from the interstate as we drive through Denver. I am one who welcomes change
when it is needed. And a new stadium can only be better for the fans of the Broncos.
Or will it be?????
