This collection of 21 old letters, transcribed in 2003 and arranged in chronological order, had been kept by
my grandfather Karl Absalom McVey and was given to me by my grandmother Rose (Martin) McVey. The
spellings of words are those of the writers of them. Written characters that I found too sloppy to discern are
indicated by "_". Any writing not in the original letters is surrounded by "[ ]". Scanned images of envelopes
in which four of the letters were sent are shown below, slightly enlarged. John McDonnell
