Katie Holmes was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She started acting in theater productions, but didn't think she had a chance at movies and TV. Her big break came when she attended the National Modeling and Talent Convention in the New York Hilton in New York City. There a manager discovered her and told her to go to LA. There she tried out for Ang Lee's The Ice Storm. Once she got the part, her manager told her to go to LA for pilot season. Acting with her mother in their basement, she sent a tape in for the auditions for Dawson's Creek. She got a phone call later saying that Kevin Williamson wanted her. But going out to LA would mean missing the school play she was in, Damn Yankees. She would not desert her friends, so they rescheduled the meeting and now the rest is history.
