Bleary-eyed Breakfast.

It was early morning in the bunkhouse and none of the riders had slept properly the night before. Some of the riders got to bed late because they had to finish some chores, and others got up during the night for various reasons. Because of this, each rider appeared at the breakfast table in a somewhat dishevelled manner.

Can you work out who sat where, what was wrong with each rider's appearance and the reason he or she slept poorly?

The rider with a grubby face, who spent several hours sitting with a foaling mare, sits opposite Buck, who does not sit in position 6.

Both riders with something wrong with their socks sit in odd-numbered positions.

Ike sits between the rider who is still wearing long johns and the the rider who was up during the night because of illness.

Jimmy sits in position 1; he did not get up looking for the intruder he heard in his dream.

The rider who had bad dreams is sitting opposite Cody.

Kid was so tired he buttoned his shirt up incorrectly; he does not sit on the same side of the table as the rider who was up fixing a saddle.

Ike, Cody and Jimmy were all up doing horse-related tasks. The rider who shoed a horse, who did not have uncombed hair, sat in position 4.

Lou did not wear odd socks.

Hint: work out first what Cody did and where he sits.

The solution:

The rider who shoed a horse sat in position 4; it couldn't be Ike, who sat in a middle seat ( clue 3) or Jimmy, who sat in postion 1 (4), so it has to be Cody. From clue 1, we know that Jimmy could not have been sitting with the foaling mare, so he had to be fixing the saddle, leaving Ike to see to the mare and colt.

As the rider who had bad dreams had to sit in seat 3, and Jimmy was up with the saddle, Ike has to have a grubby face and be sitting in seat 5 (1), opposite Buck. Kid can't sit in seat 3 (6), so he had to be sitting in seat 6 with Lou , who was up because of bad dreams, in seat 3. (5)

We know from clues 6 and 3 that Kid had to tbe the one who felt ill during the night and Cody was still in his long johns. Both Lou and Jimmy had to have sock problems (2), but as Lou's socks were a pair (8), hers had to have the holes. This leaves Buck as the rider with uncombed hair who thought he heard an intruder.
