Best Laid Plans Review

by Ann Duncan

Well, I just got back from seeing Best Laid Plans (after a seven month wait!) and left the theatre feeling pretty satisfied and since I'm a bit of a film buff, here's my amateur review (don't worry there are no spoilers).

Alessandro Nivola (who incidentally looks like a younger and spunkier version of Gary Oldman) plays Nick, a college dropout with a dead-end job. One night he gets a call from his old college buddy Bryce (played by His Joshness). Bryce tells Nick that he needs his help because a girl he took home the night before has accused him of rape. We then flashback to three months earlier when........OK, that's all I'm going to give away.

Needless to say, there is a double cross, no - a triple cross, and a few unexpected twists in the plot which help maintain the viewers' attention throughout. I liked Nivola (who played Nic Cage's brother in Face-off) in the lead playing a (seemingly) average guy who makes some extraordinarily bad choices to get himself out of a jam. Reece Witherspoon was quite good too (not as good as she was in 'Freeway' but much better than in 'Cruel Intentions').

OK, now for my assessment of Josh and the character he plays. Frankly, I hated his character Bryce. He's just one of those annoying, pathetic people that you just want to slap. He was whining and moaning and complaining throughout the film."What are we going to do now?""I have to eat something" etc. etc.He told terrible jokes and was generally conceited, obnoxious, condescending and a bore. He has no redeeming features (except for those cute glasses).

Josh's performance almost borders on caricature if it weren't for the fact that we all know someone like this guy. Someone who just doesn't get it. It certainly prevents us empathizing with his character (which is definitely the intention of the film). So is it a good performance? Well, just think about it. Josh actually made me hate his character! Me! The one who worships the ground he walks on. So I must conclude that his performance was very successful and in playing such an annoying character like Bryce, he has proven that he is willing to take risks as an actor and that he really has a lot of range. Now if he would just play a romantic lead.....

To sum up, Best Laid Plans is well worth checking out. It looks quite stylish, has some very interesting characters (the support cast too), an intelligent and fascinating plot and it's quite cool. I thought the ending could have been improved but it's not too bad I guess. Anyway, on the fair and impartial Ann movie scale, I would give it 7.8 out of 10. (I'm very specific about these things).
