Origin of BUSSELL name
taken from the OXFORD dictionary of English Surnames: " a variant of Bushell. Bushell goes back to the Dooms Day Book: Bushill, Boshell, Bossel, Bishell, Bissill. Roger Buisel in 1086 in Somerset. Means one who made bushel baskets. from Old French boisselier. "
There appear to be distinct "pods" of BUSSELL and it varied spellings, (BUSSELLE,BUSTLE,BUSLE, to name a few).The BUSSELL'S seem to first apprear in Pennsylvania and Virgina in the early 1700's. This points to the SCOTS-IRISH immigration at that time. In the mid to late 1700's, we find them in North Carolina and Kentucky. It would appear that a family, perhaps a father and his sons may have first arrived in North Carolina, John, Presely,James and Thomas BUSSELL. While this is not proven, I feel the father is, in all likelyhood,the original RHODAM BUSSELL. This is an 'educated guess'on my part . My hypothisis is based in large on Nameing patterns I have observed in this line. along with census and tax record research.
From North Carolina, we see Presely BUSSELL move to the Mississippi, Tippoh Co. region. From there we find them dispurse to White Co. Tenn., also Hawkins and Putnam Counties. We can then track them to Ouchita Co. Arkansas, Clark Co. and Pike Co. to name a few. My line, Richard Bussell, traveled this route. I believe him to be the son of Presly BUSSELL and Mary Martin. MAry died, and PRESELY BUSSELL remarried LUCY WILLIAMS CLARK. Richard Bussell, his brother RHODAM BUSSELL, half brothers JAmes and THomas BUSSELL all served in both the Confederate Arkansas Army, and the Union 4th Arkanas Calvery. Rhodam Died in Spetember 1864 in a Union Hospital at Little Rock of Dysentary.
