The Friendly City
While in Frederick, Albrecht Harvesting will be
cutting for Roger Fischer. We started cutting for Roger and his
late father-in-law, Doyle Williams, over 25 years ago. Needless to
say, Roger and his family are not only some excellent customers, but
very good friends too.
We moved the combines down to Frederick, OK.
Saturday, May 5th.
I always like to move the combines down there ahead of
time. When Roger calls
me and tells me the wheat is ready, all I have to do is go down with
the campers and we’re ready to cut wheat. This year that happened on
Saturday, May 26th.
We arrived in Frederick about 1:30, got the campers parked,
bought fuel for the combines, that hurt, fueled them up, and drove
them out to the first field.
I cut a sample to see if the wheat was dry enough.
10.9%! Roger said I
should have called you a day sooner. Any time the wheat is below
13.5% it is considered dry enough to harvest. We cut one 60 acre field
that evening. The
moisture averaged about 12%.
The test weight was 62 and the field averaged 45.2.
Last Fall Roger bought a new no till air seeder. I had my doubts about him
going to no till farming for wheat, but if this year is an example
of what will happen, I am all for it. All the fields that we
harvested averaged in the 40s with the exception of those that were
pastured. Those were in
the 30s. And the
largest benefit to me the harvester was that the no till fields were
a lot firmer after a rain.
When other harvesters were having problems with mud, we were
able to move right along.
Oklahoma wheat acres were reported to be down by as much as
60% this year because of the dry conditions last fall. I felt very fortunate to be
down only a couple hundred acres at Frederick compared to last
year. I talked to some
crews that were down as much as 75% to 80% in acres to harvest from
last year. But my turn
will come up north.
On Wednesday June 6th we finished harvesting at
Frederick. On Thursday
we washed the combines and loaded the tractor and grain cart. Chris and I moved the grain
cart to Hunter, Oklahoma on Friday. On Saturday we moved the
combines and campers.
